Thanks on the Crankshaft Position Sensor
I just wanted to drop you guys a line and say thanks a bunch. I went down to Napa, bought the $25 crankshaft position sensor, got myself a Haynes(or one like it) repair manual, and took the 10 minutes to replace the sensor myself. I couldn't believe it.
The dealer was looking for at LEAST $180, it cost me a total of about $38 plus a couple minutes. You guys got me pointed in the right direction, really 'preciate it. Happy driving!! Steve

I'd say a good number of people started down the path of self-maintenance when they realized that some shop was going to charge an outrageous amount to replace something that was just too easy. Mine was a fuel filter. Pep Boys wanted $70 to replace a $14 part that would take 10 minutes to do with nothing more that a socket wrench and a rag.
A buddy of mine has a Nissan Pathfinder that was going to need an MAF sensor. The dealer was "generous" enough to offer "free labor" for this $500 part. I looked online for it and found the procedure and sent it to him: Loosen four bolts, remove MAF, install new MAF, tighten four bolts. Gee...thanks dealer for your kind offer of free labor. My buddy found the part at an online salvage yard for $100 and he and his girlfriend put it on, late at night, in the dark, after many beers. |

It must be the beers that got it done so much cheaper. And the late at night...yeah.
It's pretty amazing how much dealers will charge, and the crazy thing is, most people pay it! Not something that I can justify if I can do the job just as well for so much cheaper. But oh well, I learned my lesson. Now if only I could find a cheap clutch.... |
