Lightweight Sub?
I wanna toss some bass in my trunk, but I don't want a 300lb box. Any suggestions on brand, size, etc?

I am in the process of building a minimal box for my old Polk dB 10". I used to push around 250W RMS through it in my Shadow and it was enough to rattle the rearview mirror. I am making it out of 3/4 MDF, and as small as feasible, so I can save the trunk space (I kept my old Shadow so I can feed my real bass cravings with 2 RF 15's, I think I am walling of the back seat/trunk area). It intall might grow as I attempt to flush everything and the amps in. I have time to play with it, so I am in the cardboard model stage. When I finish I will put up a pic.
If you want send me the specs for sub you wantand I can work something up in CAD as far as shape and size. I could even tell you what it will weigh when done. For free naturally, I like the challenge. Later Bob O |

I'm not sure that he's at that stage yet. I think he's still choosing a sub. I might take you up on that offer later, BOB.
The reason some subs are heavy is they produce a large magnetic field to produce a lot of cone movement/bass. Are you looking to have a high powered sub? How many and what size are you looking for? What price range? |

JL makes 3 microsubs: 8.1 (3 8's), 8.2 (2 8's) and 8.3 (1 8). I have 3 8's in my GF's Forester and they hit good. Of course, you have to remember that it is a wagon. I have 2 8's in the rear fenders, so they inside the car and, boy does it hit. The boxes are sized just like the 2 8.1 microsubs. I say, just get a 8.1 microsub and put it behind the driver's seat. It fits good.

ya, some subs have a 20lb magnet. Other enclosures are just flat out heavy. I wanna keep it under $300 prolly, cheap, but decent sound. The whole thing is, I want the bass, and all, but I don't want all the weight in the trunk. I was thinking about an 8" powered Bazooka tube or something, but I dunno. The 8" JLs are tempting. A high powered system is nice, and may be down the line, but right now, somehting small, light, and affordable, as well as easily removed.

I think The Rice King has the 3 8" JL's in the mircosub box. ask him about it. From what i've heard it's good for 3 8" subs and it's not that big. King Dingaling has 2 12" JL's I like JL's because IMO they are cleaner, deeper, and louder than the average subs and they offer a good bang for you buck. But if I had the money I would buy a pair of Kove's. Nothing like turning your brain to mush with a pair of 1200w RMS subs.

John, if want a box designed let me know, I will be glad to do it. I could even build it as I have the new DeWalt woodworkers 10 inch table saw (with 52 inch fence, arhh arhhh arhh) and a model maker at work who is more than happy to take care of G-jobs (finally perfect sub cutout circles effortlessly, thank you CNC mill).
As for subs, Wolve, make sure you identify your budget, your sound requirements, space/weight requirements. Space/weight is first, then budget, then how much bass to you want? Three 8's won't equal two 12's or 15's, or a wall of 10's. Like the vans at Carlisle, if you want MASSIVE bass you must give up space. Circuit City type places are a good place to get feel for output, especially since CC will demo any sub in your car (for free I belive). Just for heavens sake don't get it installed there. Go to a real shop. My personal tastes run in the two 8's to one 10 range for the Subie. Note: the single 10 is plan, depending on output I might put more, but I doubt it. My shadow ES is the same size , though the trunk was accesable from inside the car (fold down rear seat--what a novelty--hello subaru?. That single 10 was more than enough to hammer you. Also I prefer a sealed box to anything else for SQ and size. Ported, reflex, isobaric give better output, but the box size grows as well as the difficulty of making a good box. Sub brand is difficult, I would go with a name brand, especially someone who only makes speakers. Polk's DX line is good (MOMO line is supposedly better, but I don't think it is as better as the price diff), Boston Acoustics come highly regarded, RF's higher lines are also good (I helped a friend put an 8 in his mazda b2000, with the small cabin it sounds great). I'm sure there are many other brands as well. A good way to get a feel for what is good (by brand)is to check out the car audio mags, especally the SQ cars. They won't put poor sounding crap in the car. Best though is to listen to them with the music of your choice and amp if feasible. What you listen and how you listen to can effect your choice on size as well. The larger sizes can sometimes be a bit boomy depending on material played as can the box design. Usually sealed is considered the cleanest sounding, but I think given correct design and install and the knowledge to know what the system limits are any size sub/box will be fine. If you haven't looked amps are damn expensive, especially for name brand/high output. I am cheap (have a wife) so I have all Sony amps bought referbished from the Sony Outlet. You can pay less than half price sometimes and I have never had one go bad or put out poor sound. Whether or not RF stuff (or similar) is worth the price increase I can't really say. My guess is if that everything were equal you wouldn't be able to discern the difference enough to justify the price, to a point. Jimbo's Fly-By-Night Amp's, assembled in his basement with electrical tape and spit are defeinetly worse. Sitck with a well known brand, they didn't get that way by selling junk. If the message is disjointed in places, I am tired and too lazy to proof read posts. Good luck Bob O |

You might want to consider Illusion carbon free-airs, if you are really anal about keeping trunk space like I am. Mine are mounted in the rear deck holes.
