must die!

Default In a biz/networking situation, how do you start a conversation?

I sometimes feel awkward and have difficulty starting with "strangers" since I have nothing to talk to them about.

How do you do it??

Wait until somebody tells a joke, then laugh uncontrollably until you come up with something to say. Grab the shoulder of the person who you want to "network" with if need be.

Seriously, I don't know...that's why I was never rated at the top of my peer group when I was consulting, and subsequently left for an industry job.

Actually quite easy (taught to me at school...I'm looking for a career right now so I can't give real life experience, although I have experienced a networking event for school for the purpose of networking for a career) if you think about it.

You're there at that event for some reason, and most likely the other person is there as well for the same reason. To break the ice...just do it like you would with any other stranger at any other casual event (car meet), tell a joke, introduce yourself and what you do, etc.

You have plenty to talk about, you just have to make the effort to talk about it.

Good luck!
