Default Legacy Querks?

Hope I put this in the right place.

If everything works out, I will be a regular face, name, whatever around here!
Shopping for a 2000-2003 Legacy in the next couple days and was wondering if I should know anything in perticular. Like Subaru querks or trouble spots.

Currently driving a 2k Saab 9-3 SEwith problems on the rise.

Thanx,
Tab

The spark plugs are a bit difficult but no big deal-just remove the airbox and washer fluid res.

Are you referring ot the tranny intercooler?? Do autos have those?? I'm not familiar with those...

If you have the right tools (and by right tools I mean basic tools) then its no problem. I dont think the auto transmissions have a cooler...

Anyway, back on topic. Beware the headgaskets! they WILL blow their gaskets once you get close to 70-100k miles. Althought, if caught early theres a additive they put in the coolant to prolong life, and sometimes will be covered under warranty for new ones.

O2 sensor sometimes go bad, but all car brands have that happen. The heatshields around the exaust sometimes get loose and will rattle. Easy to fix though.

Other than that, the Legacys are solid machines!

I changed my ATF yesterday, and let me tell you how much of a pain in the ass it was to refill the transmission. The filler hole is less than 1/2" in diameter and is located almost underneath the brake booster. It didn't matter which kind of funnel or spout I tried, it simply would not fit. I think there is more ATF on my driveway than in the transmission.

Spark plugs are not difficult. You simply have to remove the windshield washer reservoir, battery, and the upper portion of the airbox. After doing that (takes about 20 minutes), it isn't much different from any other car.

Subarus in general are very easy to perform maintenance on. However, I would like to have a little talk with the person who put the ATF filler under the brake booster!

Thanx everybody for the info!

Hey sha.....
How difficult would it be to mess with the headgaskets? Do you suppose a certified dealer would check for that?
Or how could I get my hands on this "additive"?!

AWD. Such an awesome feature, but you have to take care of it. Rotate tires often - even small differences in tire size will cause excessive wear to the center differential. Mixing/matching tires is obviously also bad. And along the AWD-related lines, the manual-transmission clutch won't last as long as a Honda - I bought a used Subaru that was abused and had to replace the clutch @ 70k miles.

It's well worth it though, just pay attention to certain things. I love Subarus there isn't a single other car I'd get over them (except maybe the EVO).
