Question 1985 GL : Ignition and idle issues

I bought a 1985_GL recently, and I LOVE it!!! It fits like a glove and makes me smile just sitting in it. I'm glad there is a site like this for others who understand that feeling.

One of it's idiosyncracies is that sometimes it just doesn't want to start. I turn the key and there's just a click. This can happen a few times and then it will turn over just fine, or sometimes it can take twenty or thirty times. Other times it just starts right up on the first try. Could someone give me a hint as to what might be going on? Could it possibly need a new battery? Also, am I hurting the ignition motor by repeatedly turning the key?

On another note, it just began this week to idle at extremely low RPMs, to the point that today it stalled at a red light (luckiy it started right back up). Ideas?

Thank you in advance. Warm wishes to all!

My first guess would be bad contact on the batterry or starter cables.. Have seen it on a few of the EA cars.. including 2 of my own.

This could also POSSIBLY explain odd idling.. soobs are pretty particular about the electrical system being all where it needs to be

For the Starting issue...I've seen bad cables or bad battery terminals...But most of the time it has to do with the contacts inside of the starter wearing out. They're easily replaceable if you can find someone who stocks them (I get them from a local starter rebuilder)

Default Thank you!

Thank you for the tips Mike and CalebZ! I had checked the connections at the battery, but I will definitely check out the cables and the starter contacts. Best wishes to you both!
