Default 1987 GL-10 wagon 5speed turbo...for ME!

Having sold my RS a while ago now, and SICK of bumming cars of my parents...and only needing a machine for 8-12 months...I am looking at getting the above machine, 120K miles, for $550.

I'd be the third owner...first owner is an old lady, who sold it to another old lady. She's got all the repair records but I haven't seen 'em yet...haven't even seen the car.

And there are a coupla little problems. The major two being that she smacked a wall fairly hard and "hurt" the front bumper. They've got a replacement piece but it doesn't match colorwise so they haven't installed it. But the hit damaged the air compressor up front and the front airbag suspension is on the fritz. Supposedly she drives it daily so it can't be THAT bad...

Of course I am going to check this machine out...it would suit my needs PERFECTLY.

But what are some common things to look for issue wise? This is a pure California car so rust isn't going to be a horrible issue...but I will be sure to look carefully. Remember this is a year long investment so I'm not terribly concerned about minor issues, just major ones. I am very mechanically inclined (completely rebuilt my 1972 MG Midget back in the day, did all the work to my RS when I had it...which was a lot!).

Any thoughts?

Woot....I'm excited about being a Subaru owner again...turbo AND stick AND 4WD? SWEET!

If the AC compressor or condensor are damaged I say just get rid of the AC system completely. Take off the hard lines and the compressor and the condensor. you can also swap the old air suspension to normal coil over setups. I will be taking my old kinda worn struts off my wagon, I'd let em go really cheap.

The AC compressor has nothing to do with the air suspension (Its ok, I screw up like that sometimes)
You can remove the air suspension and replace it with front shocks from a Legacy(2wd or 4wd) and the rears can be replaced with coil overs from any car from 85 to 90. If your only going to have it for a year, I would leave the compressor and air tank all on the car. It can be a PITA to remove (Inside left fender). If you can get the maintenance records for it make sure when the timing belts were replaced and make sure all the water hoses for the turbo are in goo shape. Cooling system is real important too, make sure the rad is good.

I will hopefully be checking it out today, and will be sure to check all those things.

I've been doing a little research and yeah, timing belts seem to be an issue. And I was thinking about the turbo too...but yeah, cooling is key. I'll give it a deep check.

Hopefully she was the kind of person that keeps all the records. The guy I talked to said she is...so we shall see.

Depending on the cost...I may deal with the PITA of R&R the air compressor if it is cheaper than replacing the suspension. We shall see.

Thanks for the advice! I can't wait to check this baby out!

make sure all the hoses look good, ie: cooling system. especially the one on the top of the turbo, and the skinny one under the intake.
review the service history and determine when the timing belts were last serviced. subarus require service at every 60,000 miles, i have seen them go longer. if they are not worn you can still adjust the tension.

basically take care of the level of maintenenced required for a car of such vintage.
