Engines don't like to idle???
This is for all you engine techies out there,
I remember hearing from somewhere that engines in general do not like to idle for long periods, especially motorcycles. Furthermore I have heard that you do not achieve any extra gas mileage when the car is put in neutral coasting down a slope as you would if the car was in overdrive. Why would this be true since the car put in neutral is idling with lower revs than in overdrive?
(Hopefully this is not a newbie question )

I would figure that the car would get better mileage in gear while coasting downhill because, if the car is in neutral, some fuel has to be burned to keep the engine turning. If the car's coasting, you can get away with not injecting any fuel, and the engine keeps turning over anyway. I think that some fuel is still burned even while coasting, but probably less than at engine idle.
As for engines not liking idle, I dunno.

Even late-model watercooled motorcycles will overheat if they are idled for a long time.
Idling long periods is not great for any engine. Very high performance engines tend to foul plugs too.
