Default 17x8 rim for '04 STi - What size tire too big?

Question -
I've been reading around about 17x8 rims and seems some recommend for '04 STi 235/45R17 and some 235/40R17 without rolling the fenders. What do you guys think, are both sizes safe without rolling the fenders on an '04 STi - pro's and con's? Any help appreciated.

depends on the offset.

245/40/17 will keep your OEM tire height and not rub unless you lower your car.

235/40/17's too short, unless you're looking for that. 235/45's a bit taller than OEM; should be okay unless you lower the car.

I'm running 245/40/17 on 8.5 +48 with Eibach springs (rolled rear fenders) -- no rubbing, but then I use these only for the street. They'd likely rub for track/autox.

The 17x8 rims would be ET48's. I did not realize 245/40R17 would fit. What do you guys think with the offest of +48? I won't be doing any track/autox. All opinions welcome. I want to make a buy very soon and need to make sure I'm OK without rubbing.

I went with 235/40R17 *because* it is too short; the gearing's a little tall on a regular WRX, though. It will also be a bit lighter I think, and may even improve braking a tad.

I also did not want to have any clearance issues, and I do plan to slightly lower the car (no more than 1") and I really, really do not want to roll my fenders.

Hopefully I made the right choice. I did a lot of reasearch and this seemed to be the best option for the non-STi and avoiding rubbing issues.

I think you're pushing it with the 245's, though- I think when you get a carload of friends and take them for a hellride on some onramp, they're going to rub, and you'll end up rolling the fenders.

The 235/40-17 tires should fit with no problem. I had a set of these and they worked well. They're short, but that's not bad.

I ran a set of 245/40-17 tires on 17x8.5 SSR Comps (ET48) on my 2004 STi with "pink" springs and they fit pretty well. No rubbing under normal use, but like DM says, if you get people in the back and then do high-force manuevers, they will rub the fender liner. That was with slightly wider wheels than you're looking at, wide tires (Kumho Ecsta V700), and slightly lowered with the springs.

My guess is that on 8" wheels with that offset, you should be able to fit most 245/40 street tires and not have an issue. Of course once you do this, you'll find yourself wanting the 255/40s (just a little minor rolling...), then looking at those sweet 275/40 tires, and next thing you know you've got someone hammering away at your fenders.

WRX_Mundi: Thats great news to hear. I just ordered 17x8.5+48 Volks for my 04 STi that sits on Pink springs. I had searched and searched and never found any information on if I would have problems with them or not. Its good to know that you didn't have problems with the 245's.
