falken vs conti..... falkens in snow?
I was originally intending on purchasing the Continental Conti-Extremes as an all season tire. I have recently discovered the Falken Ziex 512's though. I need a tire that is going to get me through Chicago winter, and every other season. I know a fair amount about both tires, but I hear mixed reviews on how the Falken Ziex 512's actually work in the winters... I know the Conti's are great in snow, but they are also a bit more expensive and are not as good as the falkens in the dry.
so can anyone give some info on how the Falken Ziex 512's would perform in snow? We typically get about 6 good snow storms here in Chicago with snow fall ranging from 3" - 9"... the majority of winter is just light snow and LOTS of wetness and slush... but I dont want to be worried if I have to drive in 6" of snow. thanks

Why not consider the PZero Nero M&S? From everything I have read they are just about the best all around performer and what I am going to be getting soon.
I don't think worrying about the conti's slight advantage in the snow is reason enough to get them. I too live in the Chicago area and figure if the snow gets bad enough, I'll stay home. |

I went through a lot of procrastination about what to get -- initially i wanted true winter rubber (ie blizzak lm-25s, Hankook W300s, etc) but the pricing is just insane, and I've survived every other Connecticut winter on all-seasons... They should be here Tuesday and I'll let you know what i think... Hell they can't be any worse then the RE92s... |

If some people would tell me that the falkens were good in the snow (not snow tire good, but just good enough to get through winter without sliding around in snow and feeling pretty confident).. I would buy them right now. the conti's are on back order too, so if I knew the falkens were pretty good in snow I would buy them. I know that they ranked #1 in consumer reports, but did they also test in the snow? how did it do? |

I'm picking up a set of Ziex 512s for my Civic. I'm getting them siped though which hopefully will make them work as well as the Nokian WRs I had on the WRX.

Installed and tested :)
Had my first taste of the snow yesterday in the 512s and they performed quite well.. We got about 5 inches and my dad's f350 is in the shop getting a rebuilt motor and some tranny lines fixed (go ford), so no plowing
I have a VERY steep driveway in the woods of CT and I went up and down several times to test em a little. Usually the technique to get out is to gain enough speed at the bottom to just kinda slide through the top turn (because it's too steep to gain any further speed at that point). Even at low speeds (<5mph) entering the top turn I never had a problem making it up. Essentially snow performance is on par with some of the best all-season tires I've ridden on, while not being quite at the level of an exclusive snow. Dry grip was surprisingly good as well. Certainly not on the level of the RE070 (or any summer exclusive tire), but they're not too soft and the sidewalls aren't nearly as squishy as I expected. The STi's ride is significantly smoother (slight pavement imperfections no longer require dental fillings to be reseated!), and as of two days of driving on them, they seem very progressive in their limits (at least on semi-sandy roads). Overall these tires were the right choice for me, they do good 'nuff in the snow (hey it's why we got AWD subies right?), and they're stiff and sporty enough to keep me amused when we're not buried in a blizzard.
