I don't an an Impreza yet, but I am of those who strongly believe that we should have 2 sets of tires. One set of winter tires and one set of performance tires for the summer has always been my way to go with my car!

I'm sure that in the end, it's all worth it, even if it costs a little more. All-seasons will be average in the summer and the winter... As my dad always said, tires are your only contact with the road, so never neglect that part of your car!

just my 2 cents!

Silver,

For tires, all seasons, I would recommend Toyo FZ4 but in reality I would recommend a performance summer tire with a winter tire combo...

Call Speedstyle or Final Lap and what the cost would be for a Kumho Esta 712 (V or W rating)... I think the cost is around $150 per tire...

Check out www.talontire.com (Montreal Company). They usually have some good prices.

Hi all,

Thanks for info/opinions... a 2 set of tire setup would certainaly be ideal, but I'm not really planning to race my car (AutoX or other).

So it`s basically for all around driving with some bursts of speed (heheh)

Thanks for the info, Robin.. I`ll check it out...

Doesn't the Ottawa area get a bit of snow in the winter? I would seriously look into getting two sets of tires.

Its ok for me to have one set of tires cause I live in BC and it rarely snows that much here, but even still I'm considering getting two sets in the future.

I highly recommend a winter and summer tire setup... about 80% of Subaru owners in Ottawa have this setup...

You don't need to buy the best summer tire (for the autox but usually they use R compound race tire anyway)...

I recommend 16 205-50-16 or 205-55-16 summer or all season tire.

and

For the winter, buy some 15" steel rims (Lachute has them for $70 each plus tax) and some really good winter tires. The steel wheels and winter tires would come out around $700-800.

All wheel drive isn't a substitute for braking. You may accelerate on snow than most cars but you won't be able to brake faster too since your ABS brakes will be intefering all the time because the all season tires just simply don't have that much grip on snow or ice....

my 2 cents....

Sold...

Some good points... I will get these 15 inch steel rims and some decent winter tires...

Thanks a bunch...

Robin's got an excellent point on the braking issue. So many people think that AWD is way better than any other cars during the winter. But when it comes down to braking, it doesn't matter at all in the braking.

Also, if you're a little tight with the cash, I suggest you look around in the scrap yards for rims. You might find some good deals, cause 70$/wheel is a bit expensive. On a previous car, I had 4 steelies for 100$... So you might want to look into that!

Silver_rs,

Well, it looks like I got here a bit late to throw my hand in for the "two sets of tires" option - they already have you convinced! (I don't think they make Z-rated all-seasons anyway)

But, I do still have time to sway you on your summer tire choice : Go for the Kuhmo 712s!! They give you the best performance for your money. I'm currently running 205/50ZR16; Robin quoted your right at ~$150 a corner, but you won't regret it. (Talk to Pat at Final Lap)

As for your best winter choice, I can't comment yet... I ran stock tires last season and it wasn't tooooooo bad, but I picked up a set of used Yokohama Guardex for this winter. I'll let you know.

Cheers,
Kevin

I have a set of Yokohama Guardex tires for my wife's Legacy. They are super winter tires! I highly recommend them.

Hi all,

Thanks for the brand/types of tires listed.. will make things quite easier for me when time comes to bye 'em...

I heard about the Khumos... seems the sidewall is pretty solid and gives good handling... funny they are so cheap though, ~150 for Zs...

Good stuff all... Muchas gracias
