good tire for bad 2/3 seasons?
Looking at picking up an 05 sti in the next week, and since I'm in cleveland, the stock wheels/tires are coming right off with our weather. Looks like rotas are the best bet for a cheap winter rim(lots and lots of salt here), but wasn't sure about what to wrap around them-I'd like decent wet weather/snow behavior, but sort of shy away from real snows on priciple. The pirelli pzero nero m+s looked reasonable, and subydude has some falkens I think, but I've basically only used dunlop for years, so wanted to see what people are using/happy/really unhappy with. Apologies for what I'm sure is a faq, but I looked through the stickies and didn't find much applicable to the 05 and non snow tire.
thanks, greg

The Pirelli's are good. The Falkens that Subydude has are the Ziex 512's which are also good. have personal experince with them and NW OH winter weather and they did very well in the snow and rain. Not to mention they are half as much as the Pirelli's. Search in this section. This topic has been covered at length over the passed month or so.

The falkens are really only ~65/tire? sounds like they could be a winner if they work well.
thanks, greg |

If you are going to run your stock stuff in the summer get some real snow tyres for the winter. Look into a high performance snow like the Nikain RSi, of Blizzack LM-25.

Yeah, i explicitly don't want snows. I've been driving a honda accord in cleveland on dunlop all seasons for the last 60k miles/5 cleveland winters. No issues as long as I'm not an idiot. I want a tire that will deal well with wet weather and some snow/slush, to be used from when i pick up the car next week through may ish, when the rain is largely done. Right now the falkens that subydude has look like a good option, since people say they do well in wet/some snow and wear well. My goal is not ice racing or high speed in bar weather.
thanks for the feedback so far guys. |

The PZero M&S or the Toyo Proxes 4's would be my choice for an UHP AS tire...

I'm a Bridgestone fan so here's how it goes:
All out dry performance: Potenza RE070 Best daily driver performance for warmer weather: Potenza PP S-03 Best "All Season" Tire: Potenza RE950 Great snow traction with very decent cold-weather dry performance: Blizzak LM-25 All out snow performance: Blizzak WS-50 I realize that nowadays the Michelin PS2 beats the S-03 by a little bit here and there and that the P-Zero Nero beats the RE950 for an all-season tire, but like I said, I am a Bridgestone junky and won't buy anything else. |

Just to close the loop, by wednesday I should have a set of rota gunmetal torques and the falken ziex's, hopefully get the car (black) on friday. consumers union 11/3 definately liked the falkens.

you may want to consider some Nokian WR's
come in high speed ratings, have severe weather (snow) certification and handle very well in the dry/wet. |
