Default Tire fitment questions

Hey, I know this doesn't mean that i know anything, but I work at Wal-Mart tire/lube/express. Today while i was looking around the shop in boredom, i found a tire fitment guide for OEM equipment. So naturally, i decided to look up what my car could handle on stock rims. The two largest sizes that i found appealing to me were as follows:

1) The normal sounding one: Tire size 215/50R16.....33 PSI front, 30 PSI rear.
2) The weird one: 225/40R18 (yes 18).....36 PSI front. 33 PSI rear.

My questionn is more about the second optional tire size it gave me....Is that even possible on our 16" rims? if so...would it clear the springs? same for the first fitment as well.

Thanks for any info you guys can provide me with.

That guide is likely refering to is what size of tire you should use if you go up a plus 2 in rim diameter. No way the 225/40/18 will work on your stock rims. Hope that helps

thats what i figured...yea, it says at the top of the box 'Plus 2" ', so, that's all i wanted to know. but I have another question.

Whats the widest 16" rim and/or tire I can put on the Subaru? I believe it said the stock rim is 16 x 7, correct me if I am wrong. So, what should i do to get more tread surface to constantly be touching the road (i.e., how do i get the widest tire possible, without major work)

Thanks again for any help

Strictly speaking, wider tires have no effect on the size of the contact patch. While you may see a minor increase due to tire construction and materials, in practice it'll be right about the same. The handling improvement from wider tires is due to the reorientation of the patch, not a surface area change.

For the money, you'd be better off spending more for better tires, and keeping your stock size.

225/50-16 is a very popular size to use on the stock WRX wheels.

Could you elaborate on that please? I don't quite understand what you mean... I thought 225 would be a nice improvement due to the change of contact area 'cause of the wider track?

I am not buying this...
You mean to tell me that a Chevette with 155s has that same contact patch as a Corvette running 315s?

I think he means that when a wider tire is used on the same rim as a narrower tire, the contact patch may not be any larger due to the bulging of the wider tire on the thinner rim.

That makes more sense, but I still think you will get more contact patch when going to a larger tire, even if it on the same size rim.
Just logic and common sense speaking here - feel free to disprove.

I think he means that it wouldn't be significant....you would have to get a wider rim to take advantage.

Hey, does anyone know of a US chain where we can purchase the Pirelli PZero Nero M&S tires and have them installed? I don't want to pay for shipping.
