It's really designed to work a certain way. The only benifit I can see would be some increased traction in "off-road" situations. You might be able to grab and throw a little more material if on backwards. It really all depends on the pattern though. There may be little or no benifit. With that in mind, I too recommend to put it on the correct way. Engineers usually know what they're doing, lol.

I'm just wondering as I have four Blizzak LM-18's Direction on properly on my car and a 5th as my Full sized spare. So I have a 50% chance of having it the right way if I get a flat and 50% the wrong way. Will it blow up the tire if I drive with it the wrong way around for a couple hundred miles? ie: till I get to a place I can spend some time and have it flipped. Should I go get a non Directional full sized spare and keep the extra blizzak for when the current 4 wear out so I only need to buy 3?

if you get a flat and its the 'wrong' way, just install the spare on its correct side (side opposite to where you got the flat), replacing a functional tire, then put that functional tire you jsut removed and install it where the flat occurred on the 'wrong' side... make sense? you just have to remove two wheels instead of one when you get a flat on the wrong side. easy enough.

So say you have two lefts and three rights with you, and you blow a left. How's that work?

Assymetrical directional tires also present a problem inasmuch as they are optimized for one side of the car only - running them on the wrong side of the car but in the correct direction (i.e. installed on the wrong side of the car, not just swapped and backwards) will result in diminished tread contact under cornering.

crap, it really doesnt work huh. caught in my own web of lies!

so sorry!

i was thinking of when you have 4-pot brakes in front (my setup) and you cant put the tiny spare in front, so you have to move one of the rears to the front and put the spare on the rear. i shoulda thought this one through...

I was just talking with some other guys today about how I love seeing cars with their blingy wheels and directional tires with two of them mounted on opposite corners facing the wrong way. One vehicle in particular I remember seeing for months this way - two corners facing the right way, two corners facing the wrong way - so it's not something that's going to blow up your tires in a couple/few hundred miles.

tread design is only there to evacuate water and having a directional tire on backwards it will not do that so, your car will hydroplane much faster

Basically, you pump the water to the center of the tire rather than to the edges.
This might float your tire a bit above the surface of the tarmac/ roadway which tends to decrease your ability to effect any change of direction and/or rapid acceleration/deceleration resulting a a significant (and potentially catastrophic) loss of control.

Short answer: you'ld be screwed in wet weather.

Cheers.

another "help please"...

are my Fuzion HRi's mismounted on my 2005 Impreza Outbakc Sport?

there's a horrible howling sound all the time, and a vibration, almost a grinding feeling, when turning.

all 4 tires show "outside" on the outside so they appear to be mounted "correctly", but the left side tread is pointing the opposite direction as the right side tread.

do directional tires come in "sets of 4" with 2 right side and 2 left side tires, and i got all the same side or something? like wearing 2 left shoes?

i have no idea whats going on.

THANK YOU!!

From Tire Rack's site....

NOTE: While initially appearing somewhat directional, the Fuzion HRi tread design is asymmetric, allowing it to bemounted on either side of the vehicle.

...just junk tires

I appreciate your reply.

I read that at the Tire Rack site too, but... sorry if I may be being a bit thick-headed about this...

So the tires are intentionally designed with the "V" to be pointing forward on the right side of the car, and the "V" pointing backwards on the left side of the car?

Doesnt that seem like the car wouldnt, um, handle very well?

well the fuzion HRi isn't gonna handle all that well to begin with since it's not even a real performance tire

i got asymtrical snow tires that are kinda like running backwards on one side too. if you are car is grinding and vibrating, it may not be the tires (unless its unbalanced).
