SSR Competition, 17x7.5 w/5mm spacer
Hello all.
Can any and all who've actually used this wheel and spacer set up on a 2004 USDM STi please let me know how it worked out, and from whom did you get the spacer? I really want this wheel, and I really don't want to go to 8.5" wheels, since I plan to never run wider than 225 tires, and I can do without the extra couple of pounds per wheel. Thanks much. Frank

Sorry, no input on the 7.5s with spacers, but do you know:
- the 8.5s are lighter than the OEM BBS wheels - 225/45s fit nicely on the 8.5s, giving about .5-inch wider treadwidth. I'm running sets with both 225 (shaved street tires for the track) and 245 (meaty street set). Sure you want to run those spacers? |

H&R makes good spacers, can get them lots of places.
Most people on hear stay away from spacers. I see some advantages to them, depending on your set-up. I have some 17x7.5" wheels that need only a 1mm more to clear '04 USDM Brembo's so I've been considering getting a 3mm or 5mm spacer if/when I go to the STi Brembo set-up. |

sorry, no help here, but greg, do you think I can run 18X8 SSR Comps with a 235/40/18 tire? I hoinestly dont care if its wider, I just want more sidewall protection for the wheels. Any thoughts? I currently run 225/40/18 with an Eibach drop. Thanks! Also, its on an 05 WRX.

You don't need spacers! The SSR Comps come in the correct (close enough) offset for the STI. Adding spacers will make the offset worse.

I don't have direct experience with the '05 WRX and this size, but shaved 225/45/17s (25.2 nominal diameter, which is tall for this size) on my '04 STi does rub a bit when under maximum cornering loads during track days. Rubbing occurs on the front inside fender liners as well as on the rear outer fender lips before they were rolled. So, with your setup it'd depend on which tires you selected, the offset of those 18x8s (my 8.5s are +48) and how hard you drive. On the street, you'd likely have no rubbing, especially if you selected a tire that was "short" for it's size. Autox, maybe a bit. Track day, probably. 225/40s are a much safer bet... just don't run into any curbs. ymmv, gr. |

Gregr01 & Omahasubaru:
Thanks for all the input, guys. I appreciate it. I know that the 8.5's are lighter than the oem BBS wheels, but the 7.5's are a couple of pounds lighter still. And I really don't understand what the big deal is about spacers, as long as you install the longer studs. In addition, while my 225's will fit the 8.5's, 8.5" is more width than I need. I would prefer a bit more tire overhang (for curb safety) and, again, that extra 1.0" in wheel width is costly in terms of weight. I know that the spacers will alter my wheel offset a bit, but tolerably, according to all that I've read on this forum. I'm looking for someone to explain to me why I should use the spacers. Again, thanks..............Frank |

Yeah you can run spacers. Best way to check is to cut some different sized peices of wood to use as a 'spacer' to test how much you need to clear the brembos with probablly 2mm of clearance... make sure you're checking on the one nub on the caliper that sticks out the furthest. Then you can measure your wood and find out how much of a spacer you need. I'd think 5mm would do it, but you never know.

Follow Up
As follow up, I now have the wheels and the 5mm spacers (and longer lug studs) on my car.
All is well. This set-up works just fine, with plenty of clearance. Thanks...............Frnak |
