Default Pressure Lost Somehow

Ok heres the deal..

Stock rims w/ Michlein Pilot XGT H4 All Seasons, on my MY00 Legacy Sedan.

Approx. 1.5 weeks ago, I inflated the tires to correct pressures when the car had been sitting all night. I put in 32F, 30R, like the drivers door sticker says.

Tonight, I checked my pressures cuz my tires seemed to be bellying out a little bit, and they have gone down to 30F, 28R. How did this happen? It has been quite cold here today and last night, around 10 degrees or so, but I garage my car in a heated garage at 55 degrees, and I checked the pressures JUST after I came in from a drive. It did snow today, and drove through a lot of that. Could that be the cause? Any ideas?

water gets in the bead. then it freezes. and then you drive on it. and then the ice cracks and lets air out. plus air contracts w/the cold.

Its common and also natural to happen?

very common. keep an eye on those tires in the winter. it was really bad on my loyales because the rims wre such rusty pieces of crap. the air would leak right through them when it would get into the 20 below range.

if you are really worried about it you could have the tires remounted and aske for some extra sealant goop to be put on the bead.

On the other hand the pressure will vary ~1psi / 10DegF, so you could easily be just seeing temp variations. Especially since you saw a very uniform drop.

If it were actual leakage I wouldn't expect it to be quite that even a change.

I compensate when adjusting my "cold" tires in my similarly heated garage in the winter time, adding pressure based on what I expect the ambient temps to be for the foreseeable future.

PV=znRT

if your garage is at 55 deg F (515 rankine) and the pressure is 32psig (46.7psia@sea level), once they drop down to about 10deg F (469 rankine), you would expect the pressure to drop to 28psig. You would expect that driving on them in the cold would put the temps somewhere in between the garage and the 10 degrees since tires don't make much heat in the winter.

Check your pressures again once they have warmed to 55 degrees again. You will probably find that they are back up to almost exactly where you put them.
