Tire pressure monitoring systems out there..
I've always been anal about monitoring tire pressure and keep looking around for aftermarket systems out there. I propose using this thread to post the systems we find to keep track of what's becoming available. I haven't been impressed by the acurracy, display and price for the very few systems I've seen. Also would be interested if anyone has retrofitted any OEM monitoring systems out of other cars. Thoughts?

the retro fit idea would be far to costly and time consuming because of the integrated technologies .... some OE systems utilize the ABS wheel speed sensors while others have sensors in the wheels ... alll aftermarket versions use sensors in the wheels

I use this:
Air Alert Valve Caps Autoweek Magazine had written up a short paragraph on this product a few issues ago, and I bought it. It works great and lets me know when I have a drop of 4 psi in tire pressure. The LED in the caps blinks if you need to get air. It's much cheaper than the other tire pressure monitoring systems on the market. |

I had the SmarTire system installed a few weeks ago. I guess it's okay, I don't really have any references to draw upon. The psi measurements don't match my little handy tire gauge and I don't know which is more accurate. Sometimes a tire or two won't register, then you have to come back to a full stop and drive before it finds them. The full display unit is backlit for the first few minutes after the system is activated but it washes out the icons at night. Other then those few complaints, the system has lots of features.
I hardwired the display to the accessory power. The confusing part, according to the specs, is the max amp draw for the full display is less than the basic display. Oh well, I just went with a 0.5A fuse which is more than sufficient. |
