Default Recommend me an All-Season tire!

Hi, i am in the market for some new wheels (which i think i have found the ones i want to get) but i would like to get some all season tires.

I do mostly city driving, but do drive up to the mountains to go snowboarding on the weekends and make the occasional weekend road trip to some bigger mountains which could require more snowy driving.

My question is this. What is cheaper all season tire that will perform well when the road conditions are poor (snow and ice). So far, after searching i found some Kumhos that look pretty good. I have bought Kumhos in the past and for the price i think they are a good value. Kumho ECSTA ASX (Ultra High Performance All-Season). I want to stick with the stock tire size and width (Size: 225/45WR17) as im running on STi pink spings.

What would be some good alternatives to this tire? keep in mind i drive mostly in the city but want to feel safer on snowy mountain roads, compared to the summer RE070's. Thanks in advance!

How do they handle in dry conditions? Are they still responsive?

Excellent. This is what im looking for since i live in california. I rarely need to deal with snow, but im not going to be one of those guys that says its ok to drive in snow on summer tires.

I don't really know how they do in the snow though....since it is more of a summer all season tire, it won't do that well in snow and ice (Continentals would be better). I originally thought I would run the PZero M+S all year around, but I see quite a bit of snow, so I decided to get LM22s. Now I wish I would have gotten summer tires instead.

I've got 18K miles of mostly bay area driving on my Nokian NRW's and they are still showing all of the factory sipes. The tires are probably on par with the RE92's in dry handling (read, not great), but they resist hydroplaning very well and are remarkably good in the snow at Tahoe. Even though they aren't great in the dry, they are very predictable at the limit...in the rare instances I push them that hard. I picked mine up for ~125 a piece at etires, but they were on clearance to make way for the WR, which is the next generation of NRW.

They actually do pretty well.

Their strength is actual snow traction. Ice is their weakest point. Slush lies somewhere in between. Even then, the weakness lies in braking more than anything else. Lateral traction is quite solid.

If you lived in an area where you had to drive in ice every day during the winter, I would recommend getting a winter tire. However, if you are in an area where they regularly treat the roads with salt for ice, you will probably do just fine with them.

The WR's are much better than than the RE92 on dry and wet. (and a tad better than the NRWs in all conditions) And on snow and slush there is no comparison with the RE's. WR's are as good as any pure snow tire I have experienced on slush and snow up to 3" deep (i.e. Gisslaveds and Vserstiens). Ice and >4" of snow is a different story, if you are on it more than 4 times a year go stud or studless snows. WR's can be found for between 130.00 and 160.00. Oh and they come w/ a 50K warrantee. And compared to other similar tires, they are still available this time of year. All the other good AS's & hi-performance snows are sold out.

Happy trails

Another vote for the Pirelle P Zero Nero M&S.

Coming from a set of Brigde Stone RE750,(which are awesome summer tires) I was very surprised that the Pirelle could handle this well. Good grip, Stiff side walls and way beond the re92s.
Worth the extra money!!

Falken ZE-512. Seem ok. I've driven 3k on them. Didn't have much problems with ice and snow that fell on Texas a week ago. FYI, this in a 05 STi. Took the tires through slush and snow between 60-70mph. I could feel the drag when the tires went through it though while I was doing lane changes.

Another Pirelli vote. A big difference compared to the wore out RE92’s they replaced. I haven’t driven in the snow with them yet though.

Another for Falken Ziex 512. I'm on my second set and very pleased... will further put it to the test come first snowfall.
