Unhappy tirerack / road hazard tire replacement quandry

question for you guys (luke, you'd prolly be able to best answer this):

i got a set of wintersport M2s for my wrx about a month, month-and-a-half ago from the tirerack, plus the road hazard program dealie. just the night before last, i smacked a huge man-eating pothole (it would've taken the whole front of my car out, i think -- it was like a section of pavement was simply missing -- but i swerved and got _mostly_ out of the way), which took a gouge out of my right-front sidewall. the tire is unrepairable, according to the firestone i showed it to, that conveniently happened to be right there.

now, normally i would call up road hazard and get a replacement tire -- in fact, i've already started a claim with them. however, there's no wintersport M2s left in 205/55/16. *anywhere*. tirerack is all out, dunlop is all out, town fair tire, national tire/battery, sam's club, costco, friggin walmart, nobody has any of them left.

thanks to the friendly nesic-folk, i'm actually on an extra wintersport M2 on a wrx wheel right now, but it's just a temporary solution until i get this all sorted out (kd7000 was nice enough to lend me an extra one for a few weeks that he had kicking around).

what do i do, though? i saved for months to get the cash to buy the tires, and now, less than two months after i got them, one of them is ruined and can't be replaced. i can't shell out another $400 or so for a whole new set of snows, i just can't afford it... am i stuck with a mismatched tire (which will REALLY piss me off come ice-racing time), or is there any way tirerack can send me a whole new set of snows and i can send them back the other three or something, or am i just s-o-l?

help!

this is really a tough one because as stated in the RHP documents the program would only cover the 1 tire .... what have the RHP adminstaters said ... and I look for 1 tire for you and can't find 1 anywhere ...

it says that they'll only replace the one tire, but they *can't* replace it -- what happens then? is it even safe to go around on mismatched tires? will dunlop get any more m2s later? i haven't seen anything in the RHP documents that even really covers this sort of situation, for when they can't live up to their side of the bargain...

Have you called them yet? Before you go dreaming up potential issues and problems, why not call their customer support line and give them some time to see if they can work something out for you?

i did call them already -- they told me i need to either buy all new tires (which i can't afford), or just deal with a mismatched one. they'll re-imburse me for one of the tires if i have to buy an entire new set, but that rather defeats the whole purpose of the road hazard program. ditto the mismatched tire bit. i just need to figure out a way to somehow have four matching tires on my car that doesn't leave me $400 in the hole. :P

(i talked to somebody at tirerack customer service about it too, yesterday -- they said they were going to check into it and call me back, but they haven't yet)

Hmmm...

Many things to consider here, but I think the bottom line I cannot fault tirerack for not replacing all 4 tires gratis. The situation is out of their control. A road hazard warranty is not like car insurance where the goal is to put you "right" again. The goal is to refund the user for a borked tire by replacement or by equlivalent value. By the terms of the agreement, they don't have to accept any additional reponsibility in the matter.

That's not to say that they couldn't make a good faith move and replace all 4, but that's rather high on the expectation scale.

There's also the fact that the remaining tires still have very good value. I don't think tirerack will take them back as they don't deal in used tires. So, while they may be usless for you right now, there's still a good chunk of money in the remaining three.

You could bite the bullet and buy a new set of tires (less the money refunded for the one) and then sell off the remaining three to people that may be in your situation. You probably won't recoup everything, but it may be worth a try.

bull3964: that's what i think they're going to tell me... the problem is that i literally can't afford to bite the bullet and buy new tires, i just don't have the money. it took me long enough to save up to get the ones that i have. :P

the girl i talked to at tirerack said they might be willing to take the tires i have back and send me a new set, because they're so new (there's only about 2000 miles on them). who knows.

You might also want to put up a local F/S in NESIC for the 3 good ones. If you get a commitment from someone to buy your tires, then you can get another set.

The other thing to do is check local tire shops. Years ago, I had a long outdated Dunlop go bad. A local Firestone shop looked around and found one for me. I had paid $100 a piece for them originally and this replacement was like $33 installed!

FYI, there are also two sets of 4 M2s with steelies on ebay right now in the proper size. Both seem to have pretty good tread depth. You might be able to snag all for four only a little more than what tirerack will refund you. Then you can put the ones you have in storage for next year and just buy a new one to complete the set.
