Default Sti BBS rims ruined?

Ok, I just got my winter wheels/tires on my car and I noticed a problem with my bbs rims.

It looks like the holes on my BBS rims are tapered, like the lugnuts I took of with them, and the washers are missing. I think the dealer left of the washers when I had my azenis mounted this summer..... I can't put washers on now because the holes are tapered, and the washers will just crush, are my BBS rims ruined?

oh, 04' Sti if it matters.

Are you sure there were "washers" to start with?

i kno wut u mean...i noticed this when i was rotating my tires...most aftermarket wheels use conical (or acorn) lug nuts...which is a different seat style than most manufacturers use...this means that the the contact between the lug and the rim is shaped like this \_/....the type of seat style most manufacturers use is called a radius and has a slight curvature that almost resembles and U shape...hope this makes sense...i believe that the washers were used to convert the conical seat type to the radius saet type to fit the type of lug subaru uses...

I still have the washers on mine....my prior comments were made based on an observation that i had made...i actually didnt even kno that the washers could come off, altho i suspected that they could...you might wanna see if the dealership could get some for u...other than that, i think it'd be a good time to upgrade to some aftermarket lightweight lugs (volk racing, mcgard) that have a conical seat type...

Dude I'd hold the dealers feet to the fire on that deal. Those rims ain't cheap, I know my girlfriend just hit a curb with a pair of my BBS.

Other than that I'd just go to discount tire and see what they'd suggest.

like i said, the wheels are fine, they simply cannot be used with stock lugs, cuz the stock lugs have a different seat type...just find some aftermarket lugs, which you prolly already have with ur new wheels (since most aftermarket wheels use conical seats), and u will be fine...

I'm lost...you guys are saying that the stock OEM BBS wheels on the STi can't be used with standard lugs?

...at least 50% of STi buyers are driving around on the standard mcgard wheel locks, right?

^^pull off a rim, and look at a lug hole...u will see a silver washer...now as for wut its function is, read some of the prior posts above for my $0.02...as long as they have these washers on them, they can use stock lugs fine...if u bought mcgard lugs with the round seat type, then ur ok....but if u got the conical seat type, then u can see how there could be a problem with the contact area between the lug and the rim....hope this makes sense....refer to the diagrams and u will see wut i mean...

There are inserts in the BBS rims but they are not supposed to be removable. They work with the stock tapered lug nut. The McGard nuts that Subaru sells are also tapered conical seats.

If someone has removed the inserts from your wheels, that is bad.

this is what i am thinking. they seem to be a pressed in insert, not a removable washer.

if someone took them out i would make sure they replace whatever the sccrewed up. i don't think they are made to come out.

Just to be clear, are you saying that the inserts are missing? Do your rims match the pic below, or are they missing the inserts around the lug seating area?

This is a pic from my '05 rims, but I believe the '04 have the same lugs and seating surface. (Yes, the bolt pattern is different from '04 to '05, so the spacing of your lug holes will not look exactly the same).

Looking at the bolt hole at the top of the rim (12 o'clock), you'll see a ring with a bluish tint inside it. The 'ring' is the insert, and the tinted area is the tapered surface inside the insert that the lug seats on. This is what is missing?

I believe the inserts are stainless steel, and pressed in by machine. Usually they are there to provide a stronger seating area on aluminum rims. If they are missing, check with a Subaru dealer to see if they have stock replacements, and can press them in. If not, an rim repair shop may be able to help. I haven't heard of anyone removing these before, but I'm assuming another set can be pressed in.

What lugs were being used? If the stock ones, how did they seat on the rim? Check around the seating area on the rim for damage from either the lugnuts, or from torque applied directly to the aluminum. (Look for scrapes or hairline fractures).

If your rims look like the pic, and are tapered inside (the bluish area), then don't sweat it. Everything's fine, and it's supposed to be that way. There aren't any washers which sit on top of the inserts or anything.

So basically, with the inserts, any mcgard conical/tapered lug nut can be used? That is, no need to go to Subaru specifically to buy stock lug nuts?

The inserts are part of the stock BBS wheel, not an add-on.

The stock BBS wheels with the stock Subaru lug nuts and the McGard nuts that Subaru re-sells. You should check the angle and type of seat on the stockers, or just get them from the dealer, they're pretty cheap.

Again, use stock lug nuts and if your wheels are missing the inserts that is bad. It is that simple.
