Default Guru question

While browsing the tireracks website looking for Hoosiers for the 05 season. I came across these stats.

the 225/50/16 has a section width of 9". A tread width of 7" and an overall diameter of 24.6". First, whats the difference between tread width and section width. And how do you come to the overall diameter. Also, Does anyone know these 3 specs for the 215/45/16 Falken Azenis.

And one last quesion. The hoosier 245/45/16 has a tread width of 9.2", and a section width of 10.1". How much wider, per side will that tire be versus my current falkens?

Thanks

Thanks for the link. I just had no idea that the section width could be so much wider than the tread width. Also does anyone know these stats for the Azenis I mentioned?

From the Falken web site:

overall diameter: 23.5"
section width: 8.5"
tread width: 8.0"

measured on 7.0" wide rims. Complete numbers:

Default yeah

normally u add one inch about, onto the stated width of a wheel...they are usually that much wider...

we try to use this..

7.5 (225)
8 (235)
8.5 (235, 245*)
9 (255, 265)

Thank you very much for the link. And wow, I can't believe that my tires are wider than the 225 hoosiers. That's just crazy. And still the 245's, which I plan to run, are only a tad over an inch wider where it counts. Thanks again. I just wish they would come out with the Kumho 710 in my size.

I believe tread width measurements are somewhat subjective, so I wouldn't read too much into it. Especially on something like a Hoosier, where you have no tread, and rounded shoulders, it's not that clear how you measure the tread width.

Well I knew the sizes on the tire are to be taken loosely at best. But I would've assumed that the actuall specs would be closer to the truth.
