Default Wendover ProSolo Notes

Wendover ProSolo Notes:

Friday, Travel and Practice

Started out at 4am driving from Medford out through Klamath Falls, Lakeview, Denio, then into Winnemucca. Managed to diminish the Jack Rabbit population in Oregon by two just east of Lakeview. The road out of Lakeview is filled with fast sweeping corners, suited nicely to a fully packed RS with snow tires. Once things straightened out, I came over a crest doing about 80mph, when bright orange construction signs indicated work ahead. Less than 200ft later, I had found the construction zone, which consisted of freshly laid gravel, about 2 inches thick. Maynard, it took quite a bit of road to get the RS hauled down to a decent speed.

Caught up with Steve Wynne (STS Neon) in Winnemucca, and we headed east towards Wendover. Arrived at the track at 3pm, after spending a few minutes washing the dead rabbit out of the wheel well of the Subie.

For those that have not attended a ProSolo, abandon all thoughts that a top level SCCA event is filled with procedures and strict processes. It was very low key, and instead of the SCCA dictating, the SCCA leaves it up to competitors to do the right thing (be at your worker station on time, be in grid on time, throw away your trash etc) for the event to flow properly. Everybody working together does indeed make an event smooth.

I signed up for several practice starts. This was my first experience with lights and concrete. I wasn’t as concerned about getting the perfect launch, as I knew I was not prepared to do a 6,000rpm clutch drop. What I wanted to practice was getting away clean, and the starting procedure itself. There are several sets of lights to watch, which seams tricky at first, but after a few starts it became old hat. I never felt completely satisfied with any of the starts, but knew I had twelve more opportunities to improve!

Saturday, Heats 1 and 2

First, the course. A drag race start with a long section of acceleration before the first series of waloms. I was into 3rd gear before these waloms, and was easily giving up 1.5 to 2 seconds to the quicker accelerating cars, especially the WRX. I could just about take the 4 waloms flat out, then hard into the power for a short straight leading into a sweeper, that lead into a two cone slalom. Darn near full power all the way up the course. Tightish turn-around with two 90 degree gates. The exit was tighter then the entry, so the line was important. Full acceleration back with another sweeper crossing the sweeper we came out on, figure eight style. This lead to a long 8 cone slalom that was top of 2nd gear. The finish was a tight right-left (or left-right on the other side) with a short burst of acceleration. A real power course.

G-stock ran first thing in the morning, just after the Formula Junior Karts. It took me all four runs to get used to the extra grip concrete afforded. I had mediocre starts, and managed to get all runs clean. This placed me 5th in class, which is how I grided for the afternoons runs.

I anticipated going quicker in the afternoon. It was warmer, I thought I felt more comfortable with the extra grip, and figured my starts would be better. I did go quicker, but only by a few tenths. I was still keeping it in 2nd on the way out, just bumping the limiter a few times. I thought I was giving it my all. I ended up the day in 7th, feeling kinda low.

That evening, we went to pizza with most of the Team ARG! Guys from Utah. It was fun meeting a bunch of people I had talked with briefly on the I-Club. Steve and I were both down the grid, and discussed what we needed to do to get more time. It was hard, because I felt like I was darn near full throttle most of the way out, and half the way back to the finish, with just the turn around and slalom to slow down for. I just couldn’t imagine gaining much time. I had a feeling any time to be gained, would come from the slalom, and from those waloms on the way out. I just needed to convince myself to keep my foot in it, and thought about grabbing for 3rd gear a bit early, as I have never felt that a stock RS is pulling its best at 6,000rpm in 2nd, compared to the grunt it has at say 4,800rpm in 3rd gear. Needed to use the advantages the car offered to my fullest.

Sunday, Heat Three and Drive Home

In preparation for Sunday morning, I dropped the rear tire pressures 2 pounds, and raised the fronts 1. I needed to get the tail a little looser, so I could get it to dance through the slalom. I also figured if it was looser, I wouldn’t have to lift as much through the waloms to get the car turned.

I was in bonsai mode, and figured I would give it my all. Steve Wynne said he has never seen me spin (must have missed the one wet event in Portland this year) and commented that maybe it was time too. Spin or win theory.

I immediately dropped time my first run. Grabbed 3rd gear early and darn near kept full throttle the entire way out. The car rotated better, and didn’t require lifting to get the nose pointed. I was just committed to keeping my foot buried. The turn around went better, and I again just buried my foot and committed to push the slaloms for everything they were worth. Once I got the arse end dancing through the first cone, I could just run full throttle the rest of the way down. I just kept my foot in it!

In the end, I dropped 0.7 seconds off both courses. Ended up 5th in class, just 0.008 seconds out of 4th! I felt good to finally put in quick runs, and felt good for my fellow Oregon Region racer, Curtis Eames in his Audi TT, for his 4th place.

The drive home went without problems, and I’m not as sleepy as I thought I would be. I’m real proud of the RS. We gave up 30 to 70hp compared to the other cars, but made up for it in the twisty stuff. Unfortunately, there weren’t enough twisty stuff! On a side note, I would have won D-stock, with E-stock combined, beating out some nicely prepped Neons. Since the ITR, WRX, TT etc. will be leaving G-stock, I feel like the RS has more of a chance in next years G-stock. Perhaps I can be convinced to attend more ProSolos!

Thumbs up Woohoo!!!

Way to go!!! Its good to see the RS be semi-competitive on a Naitonals course. Are Kevin McCormick or David Fauth coming to Bremerton? How do you think we will fare in Bremerton?

Did you have any trouble keeping track of which direction to turn? Learning 2 courses and driving them back to back (and alternating) would bug me (I think.)

PS - Those ITR's are fast!!! I'm sure glad they are going to D Stock next year.

For those that want to see a Pro-Solo in action, check out the link below...

My Legacy GT (2000) is the 2nd one down on the left hand side.

Enjoy, I came in 3rd place in my class that day against CRX's and Miata's.

Don't ask!

Anyways, Enjoy!!

Learning both courses was no problem. They use a lot less cones, and mark the big turns with several pointers, so it was easy to follow. I would say Eugene has the most confusing courses I've ever run!

We will still be sucking ITR fumes at bremerton. McCormick and Fauth were in a different league. I think the WRX's power advantage will be less, if there are no long drag race starts. Like i said, I was giving up 1.5 to 2 seconds on the WRX just in the first section. I was able to make up about a second of that in the twisties. And don't forget about Curtis at Bremerton. His TT with Hoosiers is quick.

Overall, I had fun. It was good competition, and made me drive better being in the middle of it all.

Good job Chris. Are you still thinking of making the trek to Kansas for the solo2 finals?

Yep, both Sean Ross and I will be out. I know the RS is not the car to have in g-stock, but it will be fun anyways. Looking forward to meeting more of the racing RS community.

It won't be as bad as a prosolo though... You'll do fine.

Default But, I like ITR fumes.

Chris,

I like the sound of fumes better than what I expect after seeing those results. It looks like the we should feel priviledged to suck ITR fumes. The Trevor McDermott is a NWR local. He will likely be at Bremerton. But, you beat him in Wendover. And hasn't Curtis been running on Hoosiers at PIR this year?

So, it looks like we will be completely outclassed if Fauth and McCormick make it to Bremerton. If not, we will be sucking ITR fumes and battling with the WRX's and Curtis for the remainder of the trophy spots. OK, so you'll be battling and I'll be watching from a safe distance behind you all.

I can't wait!!! I love getting kicked in the bum.

Thumbs up Wendover Pro solo

I just wanted to say how nice it was to meet the rest of Team ARG!! I have seen a number of posts from Team ARG, which made it nice to meet the majority at Wendover. Team ARG has some of the nicest subies I have seen!! The easterns just don't deck their cars out as much, as a whole.

I also wanted to thank Billy Brooks for letting me borrow his extremely nice ride!! :-)

It was nice meeting you Brian, if only for the 10 seconds or so we had to talk. I knew you were in grid, and didn't want to bother you too much.

Congrats on your win. I was rooting for the Subies, but at the same time had to give a lot of support to Steve, being a fellow Oregon Region racer, and a nice guy to boot. Oh yeah, I also agree that the STS Subies were very nicely turned out.
