Default Ticket for modified exhaust

Hi all subi fans,

I got a ticket for modified exhaust this morning on 880. I have read threads about some kind of state smog ref. Can anyone suggest one to me in the East Bay or San Jose areas? I have up-down pipe + the HKS HiPower. Assuming I have my car passes smog and noise, do I have a chance to fight it?

Also, I also got a ticket for not having a front lisence plate. Where can I have it checked?

Thanks. I don't hate police but I think there must be better things for them to do then just giving tickets like these.

You need to put back your stock up/downpipe & exhaust to pass the state ref.

and your front plate, of course..

In the Bay Area, I think it's better off leaving the ugly plate on to make one less reason for cops to pull you....

soundwave,

Thanks for the advice. It all depends on how much they charge for testing it. If it is only $30-40, I will take my chance to save my time. If the court needs to inspect it, too bad, I don't think I can workaround it by just the certificate. Has anyone you know gone through that?

You will not pass the state ref with an up and down pipe, if you got a noise violation, that is different, but if you got written up for illegal mods, you will not pass.

What exactly do the state ref check? Visual? Smog? Please give me some name or number of the state ref in the south bay.

I got a ticket too for a loud exhaust a few months back. I expected to put back the stock one and have it inspected like a typical "fix-it" ticket. Well, I was surprised to find out that it wasn't a fix-it ticket anymore, you just pay the fine and I believe it was $100. Well, I said screw that and appealed it. The cop didn't show up and it was thrown out. The reason the cop didn't show up was because he has absolutely no proof that the exhaust doesn't meet the requirement. I believe it's cannot exceed 95db at 3/4 of the peak RPM measured 3 feet from the exhaust at a 45 degree angle. Was his ear calibrated recently?

if it was for noise, you can goto a ref or any cop can sign it off for you.
same with tint and front plates. a cop can sign those off.
cops have the choice of making violations correctable or not nowadays

Good to hear a winning case. FYI, mine is not a correctable ticket. I am planning to go to court with some sort of tech data. That is why I am looking for some state ref to measure the noise and maybe the smog too.
