Default 2.5 swap or RA gears?

Basically, if you had a WRX w/basic bolt ons, etc & $2500, would you do a 2.5 STI shortblock swap, or install STI RA gears? This is my dilema in the near future. I will probably do one or the other............or just go with a "stage 4" setup instead,........????

Thoughts, opinion, comments?

Stage 4 with RA gear set is big fun. The 2.5 is cool but the gears still suck. That is what makles a car fun. Gearing not power per say. 2.5 is very torquey though. Americans love their torque.

Be prepared for all kinds of opinions on this one.

That's the rub, do the 2.5 and a good sized turbo and BAM! your tranny is fearing for it's life on every on ramp!

gears. I am sort of in your position or will be soon. I think gears you will get the most out of it because the difference in gearing should make for some fun driving.....do the 4.44 fd while your at it.

Anyone have both?
I have RA gears and was thinking about getting a 2.5L block too. Man, how would the acceleration feel with both!

2.5 makes the ratios of the wrx very nice compared to the 2.0. plus you have a stronger block to work w/. then after the shred the gears w/ the extra 80 ft lbs or so you can worry about gears.

gears... IMO your gears will go out before your motor and if the 2.0 is breaking the stock tranny imagine what a 2.5 would do.

of course it all depends on how you drive.

how strong IS the RA gearset? i'm going to be doing some stuff to my car soon....and both of these issues have arisen to me, as well. i can't decide on 6 speed or RA....and i can't decide between 2.2, 2.34, 2.5, or bigger

how do the gear ratios of the 5spd RA match up with the 2.5L block?

Everybody loves torque yes. Things to consider though.

A. Gears multiply torque. That is thier function.
B. Torque falls off after 5252 rpm. That is where smooth motors with 8K on tap pay dividends. I hit fuel cut before I hit peak power. With pump fuel.
C. I like to spin motors. I drive around at 3500rpm. I am an eye blink from 20# boost. My style is better served with 2.0. Some prefer to lug the car at 2000 rpm. The 2.5 is better in that case.
D. Gearing with less power is more fun to drive as opposed to lots of power and poor gearing. Fun to drive and excelleration are not the same btw.

A balanced 2.2 or 2.35 with a 6 speed is magic.

This is such an easy question. The 2.5L without a doubt. The gears will make it fun but the extra displacement is what will transform it. I personally like 1st, 2nd, 3rd gears in the WRX. When you've got power on tap (especially torque) it'll pull nicely. Now 4th and 5th gear, I don't want to go there

This is easy:
-2.5, built to the hilt
-enjoy at will
-'polish' the tranny gears
-'repair' with RA gearset (because you had to
-enjoy at will.

thanks so far. Basically, my budget is ~$2500 and there are really 3 options. Right now I am up,tbe,em.

If you were in my situation with that much money, would you 2.5 it, RA it, or turbo it??

thanks

id save a bit more bc you always run into unexpected costs. if you do 2.5 your barely gonna make on the block and install. then you gotta pay to tune. that will also just barely cover the gears w/ install, and if you go gears your should go ahead and upgrade the clutch. id set back and wait a while personally.

Definatly gears. I bet your tranny lasts a whole month with your 2.5 block and after you grenade the tranny you'll be out of money. If you do the gears your car will feel compleatly different and you'll be set to save again for a swap.

the power potential is actually pretty good on the 2.0L engine. i'd say get the RA gearset.

I'll try again then, $1500 for the 2.5L + $300 EJ257 gasket kit/head studs etc + $500 used UTEC + $free modded stock injectors + $250 left over for something else.

Don't launch it and the tranny stays together

On pump gas it matters little. High reving 2.0 or STI 2.5. Heads and valve train are the issue. Get the RA gears. You can do engine later. For the record I would like a balanced 2.35 or 2.5 even if it were balanced. In stock form is is clanky and unrefined. But you shift at 5K so who cares. It is like a pushrod motor. My style prefers 8.5-9K rpm. Stock STi block won't even get close with out shaking apart or throwing a rod. Nasty motor man. Makes tons of power though!

To each his own.
