read the manual. read it again, and again, and again. otherwise you are likely to blow it up. You need to verify the parameters and maps, and I personally would copy the txs basemap to slots 1 through 5, to ensure you have good maps in all slots. that said, in answer to your question. the 9v plug is for powering it up on your desk, if you can't easily get a laptop to the car. If you have not verified the parameters and maps, leave the map selector in 0, stock, or you _could_ blow your engine. Seriously. Map 1 is probably preloaded with something that is ok, but do you want to risk ~3k on that?
cheers. oh, alternately, go to txs or one of the other tuners in the greater dc area, and get it tuned properly.

Surely you are close to the TurboXS garage. Take advantage of that if you have to... but first...

Go to the downloads section of the forums at www.wrxhackers.com and get the quicktune guide from mick. Read that, read the manual, and read posts and posts and posts... reading is the key to it. Wash, rinse, re-read.

I know, it sucks, but there really isn't an easy way out other than a fat wallet. It's frustrating at first. I've been reading it all for months and it get's more frustrating, but as you figure stuff out it gets very rewarding. Until you get comfortable, run the most conservative maps. Get a wideband to measure AFRs. Make sure you are staying in safe ranges.

Ask questions.
