Unhappy Family of four struck at a rally event?

I just barely caught the story on Speedvision this past weekend. I heard that a family of four (parents and two girls) were struck when a rally racer lost control of his vehicle. I didn't hear what event it was (I don't think it was WRC), or where it was located. I just barely caught the end of that story when I had turned on the TV.

That has to be a difficult thing for the driver to deal with, not to mention the family of those hit. I don't remember if any of the family survived or not.

That's so sad. I hope everyone survived.
That would be tough for everyone on the field. If something like that happened at one of our events and it was someone else's car, wouldn't you still be affected? I know it would be tough to finish the rest of the race with that, if they didn't cancel the whole thing anyway...

The way I see it, it is Darwin at his best. I feel bad that the kids got hit, but the parents deserved it sitting in an unsafe location. Survival of the fittest. If they were smarter thy would survive. I of course would be sitting at an unsafe location too so that I could get the best view. But when I got hit I would not expect pitty.

Family killed as car skids out of control
BIELLA, Italy (AP) -- A racing car skidded out of control during a rally and killed a family of four watching from the sidelines.

The crash occurred Friday during the final qualifying round of the RallyLana race, along a straight patch of road leading into a double curve.

Driver Enrico Lavino Zona, 42, was braking ahead of the turn when his Ford Escort went out of control and flew off the course, hurtling through the bushes and trees that lined the speedway.

In its path were Domenico Bartolino, 53; his wife, Marta Paola Sado, 41; and their children, Simone, 13, and Eleonora, 6. All but the youngest were killed immediately; Eleonora died on the way to a hospital, police said.

The car landed upside down. Neither Zona nor the navigator, Elena Camusso, was hurt.

Police were investigating whether driver error or mechanical problems caused the crash.
I also like to stand directly in the path of the cars. If I get hit, I won't expect any sympathy. I usually leave myself a way out so I can at least try to jump out of the way.

At any rally, it pays to be in a safe position where the car cant hit you. If you stand in a compromised position, your life is in the hands of the driver and the car itself. Anything can happen.

Look at the WRC footage and the idiots who stand so close to the track and the moving cars. If the car loses control, lots of the spectators would be injured or worse.

Yes, you get better pictures but is your life worth it for pictures of a moving rally car ?
