problems with engine? fuel? something? help please.
Posted in drivetrain forum, but now I think it's more of an ecu or some other management problem so here goes...
2004 STi w/ 21,000 -tracked once a year ago -full synthetics -Fram Air Hog filter upgrade (same as K&N drop in filter) -other than that, everything else is stock. recently, (past week or so), I've been noticing that the car stutters and the RPM's stutter when I'm in low RPM's (under 2500), and give the car some throttle (not WOT). At first, I figured it's just cold out, and nothing to worry about since this problem doesn't happen when I accelerate slowly. However, earlier this week, I've already been driving around for a good hour, and the entire driveline's plenty warm, and temps outside are hovering around 70~deg F... I experienced the problem once again, and thought to myself ***?? is the clutch going? so I find an empty stretch of road, and from a rolling start in 2nd gear, floor it, shift slowly and rev matching, floor it again, etc... the car stutters a bit, and then I see the rpms jump a lil and by the time I hit 80 and come to a stop at a light, I started smelling clutch... ??? the stuttering noise sounds like a thumping, which I suspect is the clutch loosing grip and then gripping again?? but that doesn't make sense because why wouldn't it just loose grip and slip completely since I'm still on the throttle? UPDATE: drove from socal to norcal last night, at around 85 on cruise, the car started stuttering like it was out of fuel or something? had to downshift to 5th and keep it above 3k rpm and around 70mph to the nearest gas station to fill up, reset ECU, and then the problem went away for the rest of the trip (150 miles)... the gas gague was on about 1/4 though. not sure if this is the clutch anymore.?? Also, come to think of it, the stutter reminds me of a fuel starvation problem about a year ago when I was on a long right handed sweeper at streets of willow when I had under 1/4 tank, but this time we were driving on a straight highway so it couldn't be fuel starvation unless there was a problem with the fuel pump or some sensor somewhere. The stuttering also happened when I had a nearly full tank too.

maybe you can get someone to datalog your car, that might give you someinsight on whether it's fuel or not.
