Default How much oil do YOU put in?

I have a 2003 impreza TS (2.5L non-turbo engine).

According to the manual the engine calls for 4L of engine oil per change......

What I am currious is if this value includes a oil filter change also? (as my toyota quotes 2 different oil capacities, one with the oil filter and one without).

Anyhow, for the longest time i've just been changing the oil and dumping "blindly" 4L of oil into the engine. I change it every 5000km and when I come time to drain it I get very close to 4L of oil back out (prob loose 1/8 - 1/4 of a liter).

Well, today I decided to run the car for few mins (2-3 mins) and check the oil after the oil change and noticed something... the oil level is right in the middle of the full and empty line. I just want check if this is normal and if I shoudl add a "tad" more oil into the engine to bring it up to full...... Most of my other vehicals (a ford and toyota) will bring the oil level up to the full mark when you add the "specified" amount of oil in.

With an oil filter change, it's more like 4.2 to 4.5 depending on how long you let it drain. Should get you faily in between the marks.
