Cool autometer oil temperature reading problem

I have 2005 wrx sti,I currently installed oil temperature gauge(autometer/it has 300 degree maximum read) the problem is when it gets hot(normal daily driving)it stays maximum 300 degree, my installation mechanic says exhaust manifold are so close to the oil filter and oilfan area it trasfer the heat from there that is why,is any body know what is normal gauge temperature(is it normal to go over 300 degree),he did put some heat wrap around the sensor to block the heat but it did not work at all, and I could not find the gauge(auto meter one) it goes over 300 degrees, only one available one is oil tank temperature guage(atm-4346/autometer),is anybody help me out on this one? thanks!
