Yes, I'm new and stupid
I've got about 200 miles on my new sti and want to change the oil. Is there any one else out there that can't fit under their car and has no clue where the filter even is?

I'm not sure how low the sti is stock but I really doubt you would be able to fit an oil catch pan under there. Best bet is to pick up some Rhino Ramps at your local autostore or even wal-mart. You can find instructions on changing your oil over at scoobymods.com
Here are the instructions on scoobymods.com You might have to register to view the pics. http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/sho...ght=change+oil |

not sure about the 05's but on the 04 wrx the oil filter is hidden by the plastic skid plate (i guess that's what you call it). remove a few clips and about 4 screws to take it off.

I'd recommend jacking the car from the rear differential and engine brace, then putting jackstands under the factory jack points. |

The suggestion on rhino ramps is correct.
The filter is indeed located behind the splash guard. There are 4 pop-its, and 5 bolts (three up toward the front, and two by the jacking plate). The filter itself is at the front of the block on the passenger side. If this is your first oil change on an STi or WRX do take a note of caution - the oil on these cars really flows out quite quickly leading to missing the oil pan and making a mess all over the floor that your wife will yell at you about no matter how well you try and clean it up. Torque on the drainplug is 32 lbs. If you are the type of person who uses a new crush washer every time then pick up a few of those. A number of people have re-used the crush washer several times with no problem though (I'm a replace it kind of guy). You may also want to look into getting a fumoto valve. I just did my first oil change after installing one, and it was very nice. |

I wouldn't jack the rear of the car up by the diff. I have heard stories of them cracking.
I use an old 1 liter bottle with the bottom cut out and the lid off (like a funnel) when I change my oil. I pull the drain plug out and quickly put the bottom end of the bottle over the drain hole. This prevents the oil from splattering everywhere. |

As for the jacking point - I believe that the rear diff is named in both the owners manual and the service manual as a safe jacking point. You just have to be sure to put the jack on the cast iron casing, not the alum. cover. |

Why are you changing the oil so early? Using a jack on the rear diff is perfectly fine. Read your service or owners manual.

I'm moving this to be better forum, but once there, look in the sticky threads at the top as there's an Oil FAQ that should answer all your questions.

Now on to other things. It's perfectly fine to jack up the car from the engine lift point and rear differential. The problem is that you're supposed to use a block of wood, or a jack pad, or SOMETHING on top of your floor jack in order to properly disperse the pressure. And I would never place a jackstand on the factory lift points unless I absolutely had to. It's much safer to place the stands underneath the subframe. Changing your oil at 200 is perfectly fine, in fact it gets rid of a lot of the metal particulates that have been drawn off by the oil circulating in a new engine that's being broken in. And I personally believe the theory that if you drive your car like a baby, it'll perform like a baby after break in. Therefore you should drive the car hard for a few times during the first 1k mile break-in period, and do frequent oil changes to get those metal particles out. |

But it doesn't cost too much to do an oil change, and it'll clean out the junk your oil has acquired from running through a new engine. But if you want to follow the owner's manual...hey, that's your choice. |
