Default Will a 1997 Legacy Outback engine go into a 1999?

I have a 1999 Legacy Outback with a bad engine and a friend has a 1997 engine available....Both DOHC 2.5s??

Are they interchangeable...?? Concerned about small differences in engine management and ECU.

If there are differences, does anyone know what they are?
Engine Sensors?
Fuel Injection?
Smog controls?

Or would it be best to just swap longblocks and use all systems/sensors attached to the 1999 intake upwards.
