Default Oil change question

Quick question. I have most of the materials needed for my oil change but don't have the washer for the oil filter. Do I need to use it or should I pick some up?

Just need a quick answer please.

It is not 100% necessary, but it's good to replace. You can get away with it for one change, but pick them up in the future.

um. yes. you do need one and um. yes you should change it every oil change.

crush washer is just that... crushed... when you tighten the drain plug

this keeps oil from leaking out

reuse them.. chances are they'll leak

for $.60? $.70? heck... it's worth changing out isnt it?

I've never had a problem reusing the washer.

Same here. After all, you crush it when you tighten the plug, right? So if it doesn't leak right after you crush it, why would it leak if you reuse it?

Can't argue with that. Just saying that after 50K on my RS and 15K on my WRX, I've been fine without replacing mine.

You really should replace the crush washer, it's highly recommended with every oil change. Although it's possible that you'll get away with it, don't bet on it. Besides, it's not like it's uberly expensive, just get a couple of them at your nearest dealership.

I've seen enough of these everyday, it really a YMMV basis as far as reusing a crush washer, but some oil pan surfaces aren't completely flush. It's not like a 4EAT sump or a transmission fluid drain plug. With the washer already crushed, it no longer has that small flexible space to compensate for the uneven surface. The end result is a small bitty leak, as the drain plug is not pipe threaded (as many of you already know)

Many places that sell the OEM filter include the crush washer. It's not a heavy priced item that cost an arm or a leg. You can walk around downtown for about 20 minutes and search for change to buy 2 crush washers

It is hot here, so maybe I am missing something, but, seems to me that GHST said he did not have the washer for the OIL FILTER. Since everyone knows that the "washer" comes on the new filter, I guess are we assuming he/she had a brain fart and are spewing forth our wisdom on crush washers .
