Thumbs up Pocono Track Day Report

Due in no small part to all the great advice you all gave me on my first track day, everything went very well at Pocono today.

The event was put on by the local Miata club, and there were a half dozen Miatas along with an assorted dozen other cars. The two beginner groups only had six cars each, so we were well spread out around the 1.8 mile North Course. The North Course includes a good section of banked turn from the superspeedway along with a twisty 3rd-4th gear infield.

I had as my instructor one of those SCCA National contender in everything kind of guys. He showed me the line, which had the apexes pyloned for us beginners. The first 30 min session was a disaster--I constantly early-apexed the three tight turns in the infield. I blame rallying for that, since I'm used to pointing the car in well before the apex and sliding through to the exit. That didn't work very well on the track. The second session was much better, and I was cleared to "solo" for the third session.

The third session was right after lunch and for more than a dozen wonderful laps I was sharing the track with a spec racer that was halfway around from me, and my former instructor who lapped me every four times around with some sort of British made Kawasaki powered Can-Am replica he was considering buying. Having a racetrack essentially to yourself is extremely cool—it really allowed me to concentrate on learning the line.

Fellow i-Clubber Creditxtc was there, too, driving his Dinan supercharged M3.

All-in-all an excellent experience. $200 and a 90 minute drive for over two hours of seat time. My wife Daphne drove in the other group, so the poor Impreza didn't get much rest.

Good to hear you had a good time. I'm anxiously awaiting my first track days in early Oct at Summit Point.

Any problems with brakes? What brake setup are you using?

Thanks,
Tony

Mintex 1155s all around with OEM rotors. Legacy vented rear conversion. SS brake lines. Single stage booster.

Worked great until the last few laps when I started really using them HARD. Went away very gradually and came back after a cool-down.

If I start doing this often, I will look into something with a thicker rotor.

I was leaning towards the 1155's too. Also I plan to get some cryoed rotors so they last. Dobes said he wore through his stock rotors with one set of 1155's.

Doing Duryae this weekend? Might try to make it up there to spectate.

I'm out of town this weekend unfortunately. The 1155s are probably the best street pads I've ever used in terms of bite and feel. I've run Hawks and Porterfields on the Celica and they both required more warm up than the Mintex, and they still fade eventually. I've read good things about Pagid pads and replacement rotors on Scoobynet, but the only U.S. dealer I've seen charges ridiculous prices.

How did your motor fare on the track? EGT's ok? You still running with a RRFPR or something else? Engine temp?
