If your car isn't starving for fuel you can assume it's good. You can also assume it's been on there since the car was built. You can also assume that it'll plug up sooner than later. Replace it. It's only a 15 minute job at the most.

Symptoms of a clogged fuel filter include sputtering at high RPM and difficulty starting. Ideally, you want to replace the filter before these problems occur... Subaru recommends replacing the fuel filter every 30k miles. It's a $20 part and is easily accessible in the engine bay. The toughest part of the install is getting the hoses off the filter, but a little patience goes a long way.

Here's another good how-to page.

Angled long needle nose + intake cleaner = win.

I wish I had fancy schmancy tools for the job, it was more like...

Need nose pliers + elbow grease + strained fingers + cut on hand from when it slipped + 1 hour job + frustration at the lack of space on these damn boxer engines = fuel filter replacement.

Next time I'm cutting those filthy hose lines and simply replacing them.

quick hijack...can somebody explain to me how to replace the PCV valve? I can see the valve very clearly, I can disconnect the hose, I CANNOT get that BOV return hose out of the way. The clamp is facing downwards so I can't get that off, and there's not enough space to fit a wrench in there. Plus the BOV return hose is looking a bit worn, so I'll probably have to replace it, but if I can't get those clamps off, I can't replace jack. Any thoughts?

fuel filters are cheap ($20 or so) - so if there is any question, I would just replace it.

Then it'll be harder to get to the lines that are nestled nearly under the LH side strut tower. And you still have to take the hoses off the manifold side.

....what are you talking about? iirc, the hoses simply were wiggled onto these hard lines. it looked fairly easy to simply cut them and install another pair. In any case...wrestling with extremely tough rubber lines were not my cup of tea, especially with very limited spacing.

I had no problems wiggling them off when I changed it. It took me all of 10 minutes to change out. This was on my old RS. I hear they moved the fuel filter next to the tank in the 05 wrx

Fuel filter is IN the tank on the '05, and is a huge PITA compared to the '02-'04...which is a PITA as it is. is there any difference between the RS and WRX fuel filter removal?

Something to be wary of if you cut your fuel lines and need to replace them when you undertake this job is replacement of the hose. Most likely, the hose you are cutting is fuel injection hose which has a higher burst pressure, 30-35 psi, usually, and a higher price, usually about $8/ft. If you replace with the standard HVLP stuff that is about $1.99 per foot you stand to have that hose burst during service, a failure with predictable outcomes.

So basically I'm screwed...lovely...next time I'm slapping on some SERIOUS grease on that fuel filter before I reinstall it...of course I recommend that you don't get any grease on the tips of the filter lines, or else you'll have grease+fuel going to the cylinders.

I just finished this today... here's some advice... CUT THE LINES ON THE FILTER, NOT THE RUBBER HOSE.. after all, you're replacing the filter anyway, right? .. After doing the "wiggle" technique with no outcome... I just decided to cut the metal lines with some dikes.. then just do a simple twist and pull to get the piece out of the rubber hose... took me about 5 minutes after that.. I also managed to somewhat "crimp-seal" the lines as well, so no fuel leaked out of the filter when I pulled it..

Yes, your way is probably easier. Oh well, lesson learned. I figured the dikes I have wouldn't be strong enough to cut off those metal lines, plus I hate doing work in a way that, if I don't get it done right my car is screwed.

I'm still a fairly green mechanic.

Damn, I wish it were that easy to change the fuel filter on the STis. Last time I checked, the fuel filter is attached to the fuel pump, permanently! So if you want to change the filter, you have to replace a perfectly working fuel pump along with it! It's a $500ish part!

Ouch, tough break. But why is it connected with the fuel pump directly? Does that make it anymore efficient than putting in the engine bay?

I see no clear benefits of it having it attached to the fuel pump itself, other than the fact that Subaru wants you to buy an uncessary piece of hardware (fuel pump) to change an otherwise simple fuel filter change.

Subaru moved the filter to the gas tank in 04 for the STi and all the other Subarus in 05 Seems like a major step backwards if you ask me.

However if you look at my page:

http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3645

It says you can get and replace only the filter (not sure what the PN is though) I'm not sure why people are saying you have to replace the fuel pump too. I do remember when the STi was new and somewhere in the US people got a rash of bad gas that clogged the filters, no one had the filters yet (or PN it was so new) that they had to change the whole assy that included the filter and pump. I'm just guessing here anyone know for sure?

I called the parts dept of my local dealer and he tells me that the filter is indeed connected to the pump and that Subaru does not sell the filter separately. You must buy the whole assembly to replace the fuel filter.

I hope someone who has recently changed their fuel filter can correct me on this!

Funny in my link I have scans from the Service Manual showing the filter as a removable part. I wonder if they are doing the similar thing they did when our MAF's started going south in the 99's

Replacement interval for the in-tank filter is 60K, vs. 30K for the external filters.

Yep not saying it's cheaper, just that it doesn't have to be done as often.
