Default Help reading oil dipstick

I'm a bit confused by the STi dipstick. I changed the oil at 2000km with dino oil. I used 4.5 qts. When I check the oil when the engine is hot, say 10 minutes after turning the car off, the dipstick reads past the full mark, and the top hole is filled with oil. If I leave the car sitting for 8-10 hours (or overnight), then the dipstick reads just over the L, and only the bottom hole is fill with oil. This has happened since I did the oil change, so I don't think I'm burning oil.

Is this normal? Did I put in too little oil? I don't understand why I'm getting two different readings.

The proper fill amount is 4.8 quarts, not 4.5. So you're already a third of a quart low to begin with. The oil is best checked with a cold engine, after sitting overnight so all the oil is in the pan and there also won't be as much up in the dipstick tube to get on the stick and confuse the reading. Make sure the car is on a level surface.

Actually the proper fill amount is not 4.8 quarts for the 04-05 wrx's and sti's. They changed the oil pan size and it only holds 4.2 quarts. Otherwise, yes engine cold and level surface for an accurate reading.

LOL, the confusion continues with the proper amount of oil for the STi. Here's an e-mail I rec'd from Subaru:

Quote:
Dear Andy:

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. The engine oil capacity specification in your owner's manual (4.2 quarts) is the capacity of the engine oil and not the capacity of the engine oil when replacing the engine oil filter. The capacity of engine oil when replacing the oil filter in your 2005 WRX STi Sedan is 5.1 quarts.

Thank you for the opportunity to be of assistance. If you need any future assistance, please feel free to contact us again.

Happy Holidays,

YOUR ORIGINAL MAIL:

Hi,

I'm a bit confused about the proper amount of engine oil needed for my '05 STi. My Owner's Manual says that an oil & filter change will require 4.2 quarts, but after changing my oil and filter and filling with 4.2 quarts the level appeared a bit low. Adding another 0.5 quarts seems to have brought the level up to the correct level. Is there a typo in the owner's manual? Please advise, thanks!

-Andy
I usually fill with 4.8 quarts of oil (when changing both the oil & oil filter). This takes the oil level up to right below the "F" on my dipstick. I can not imagine 4.2 quarts being correct for the STI (no idea what is correct for a WRX).

Also there may be some confusion because the capacity is shown in liters, US quarts and Imperial quarts. Only the US quart amount applies. 4.5 liters = 4.8 US quarts.

Be sure to wipe your dipstick clean before reinserting. The oil from it can get on the inner walls of the cylinder.
