Default Gunk on oil pan...Oil leak?

Changing my oil today, oil pan was covered in gunk. Is this just normal dirt and grim from previous owner not cleaning it or should I be worried about a leak. All sides of it were covered in this gunk. I was concearned because my car was below low on oil level after 3k miles and I was worried when I found this. Bought the car a year ago used and every once in a while I find small "presents" the previous owner left me, so I get paranoid a lot.

Thanks for help.

Looks like it might be coming from the front main seal. Is it leaking just under the cam cover up by the oil pump?

I will go put it on ramps and look again, so it is oil leak then?

What is "the leak?" Is it a common suby problem? What is estimated cost to repair? This sucks.

Thanks for help identifying.

Well, I just fixed "The leak" on my '98 OBS this past week (could have done it in a day, but things broke...)
if you know what you're doing (even if you've never done it before) , you could probably do it with $50 in parts and 5 hrs labor...

having the subaru tools helps I'm sure... but my friend and I managed with 2x$1.00 bolts and a 2x4 found in my backyard for the camshaft sprocket holder

I was offered to have it done for $230 from someone else on the forums. so that's another estimate...

Oil can get swirled around the pan, and can come from almost any direction.

It doesn't seem like the oil pump/front main is leaking from the pics, I would take a look again though.

You might want to check the seperator plate, which is in the back of the block behind the flywheel/flexplate. This was more common problem on the older cars with plastic plates.

Check valvecover seals and cam seals from the timing belt cover.

From the looks of it, it seems to be minor seepage, and not exactly a puking leak. You should see the underbody of my car if you want to see an example of a "leak"

Ok thanks for all of the help, I'm going to keep an eye on the underside of the car daily and if I see anything again I'll start working on it.

Do you also get the infamous "cloud of blue smoke" at stoplights?
I had that...

No, no other symptoms other than the "gunk" and the low oil.
