Default Coolant suggestions

Hello,

OK, this does not have anything to do with my WRX, but rather my wife's car.

Her 2003 Forester XT is due for it's 30K mile service and I plan on doing it myself.

I paid for some service documentation online that tells me to use the following:

1) Subaru Coolant (000016218)
2) Distilled water
3) Subaru Coolant Conditioner (SOA635071)

I called the dealer we purchased the car from and they told me that they use Prestone coolant when they service.

As far as the "coolant conditioner" he told me that unless my Forester was part of a recall, I do not need it. We never received a recall that I know of.

When I searched on google for "SOA635071" I found something on this message board, that Subaru was recommending this for all Subarus.

So, the dealer told me I do not need it. The documentation I purchased on line says I do need it. Finally some hits on the Web indicate I might want to use it.

Any thoughts?

Matt

I've learned not to listen to the dealership. my conversation just yesterday:

"Hello, I'd like to get some Subaru coolant please"
"We don't have any we just use the regular stuff"
"oh ok, how about the conditioner can you set a bottle of that aside and I'll come grab it in 10 minutes"
"We only have what we use here in the shop"
"You don't sell it to the public?"
"No, we just have it here but it's for the shop"
"Um, ok..."

Wow, was this the dealer you purchased the car from? Thats insane. If they have a parts department they should have to sell it to you.

I bet if it was a fog light you wanted to replace they would be more than happy to take a couple hundred bucks from you.

I just picked up two jugs of the Prestone 50/50 universal stuff from Wal-Mart. It's the new formula that's good for all cars

I'm just gonna drain my coolant all the way and then fill with the new stuff for my 60K service. I flushed it back during my 30K service.

BTW - I purchased Subaru Coolant way back when the good parts manager worked at Kelly Subaru. Got it at cost too

Who is there now?

Jeez, this is like the third time I've called up there looking for something and they are either:

A. Clueless
Example: me trying to explain a clip I need after 5 minutes: "um yeah, there is a rubber liner underneath the intercooler's hood scoop on a Subaru WRX, there are plastic clips holding this piece in place. Can you look those clips up up and see if you can get me one? "Hmmm...What does this part do?" "It's a clip, I guess it clips???" :rolleyes

or

B. not SOA compliant:
This SUBARU dealership can't supply me a part that coorporate Subaru recommends to be used in your car (conditoner).

I don't know his name but whoever I dealt with last time, I'm pretty sure it's the same guy you're having all this fun with. I believe he has glasses - not that it matters, other than for reference purposes if you did see him.

All I needed was a simple clip last time that went to the fender liner and it took a while for me to get the point across to him. Eventually I had to do ALL of the leg work as to what part number it was because he couldn't "find" the part number. This was after I took him out to the car and showed him where the clip goes. He's waaay textbook and goes with whatever the computer is telling him or not telling him. I had to get North Ursalia and Jamie (Subie Gal) to source the part number. My parts number CD didn't have it either - nor did subaruparts.com

As for coolant, I just ordered the subaru coolant (3 quarts), Redline Water Wetter, and Subaru Coolant conditioner, for under $20 before shipping from Subaruparts.com
