Motul Engine Clean
I used some of the Motul engine clean before my last oil change. I decided why not?
anyone else use this on some sort of regular basis? FROM THE MOTUL WEBSITE: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++ Motul Engine cleaner Additive to add to engine oil before drain MOTUL ENGINE CLEAN is designed to be used in all types of Diesel and gasoline engines with injection or carburettor(s), with or without catalytic converter, using all kind of fuel.. MOTUL ENGINE CLEAN effectively cleans dirtying and clogging which appear in the engine. The removed micro-particles are then evacuated at the time of the oil drain. MOTUL ENGINE CLEAN provides a perfect lubrication during cleaning process. PERFORMANCE MOTUL ENGINE CLEAN, added to engine oil before draining, allows to : lower the wear decrease oil and fuel consumption increase compressions on the same way on all the cylinders decrease exhaust pollutants emissions evacuate deposits, varnishes and other combustion residues from problem areas such as hydraulics lifters or piston grooves and rings take advantage of fresh oil which will fill engine after draining increase catalytic converter’s lifetime RECOMMENDATIONS: Before each oil drain, add, in the engine, a can of ENGINE CLEAN to hot used oil. Let the engine run at idle for 15 minutes. Drain the oil and change the filter. The content of one can is sufficient for an oil capacity up to 5 litres. For higher capacities, 60 ml of ENGINE CLEAN is to be added per supplementary litre of engine oil (over 5 litres) . Do not exceed the recommended proportion. If necessary, proceed to 2 successive treatments. Combined with DIESEL SYSTEM CLEAN or FUEL SYSTEM CLEAN, ENGINE CLEAN provides a very appreciable reduction of pollutants emissions to pass Vehicle Inspection.

There is absolutely no need for this, or any similar stuff, on an engine that has regular oil changes.

There will always be some amount of deposits in any engine. That doesn't mean a flush is necessary at every oil change or even at longer intervals. However you're certainly free to do so if you want to.

I am not trying to justify it's use really. I have never used it before this weekend. I was hoping someone has used it and has some concrete proof wheter from oil analysis or better compression test results after use. After all, it is only $14.oo a bottle. I don't expect miricales, but any chance of improving engine health/condition for $14.oo is worth the chance.

Snake oil. Like has been said if you are doing proper maintenance no cleaner is needed. On some old beater well yes, maybe.

wouldn't that be bad on an old beater removing the build up from the cyl. walls allowing for blow by from the rings?

Just a friendly fyi .. make sure to find out if it is safe to use with turbocharged engines..
Any kind of "Motor Flush" usually dislodges particles, and that can get into your turbo and clog something. I guess. Not sure if the turbo oil pickup is after the oil filter.. but yeah. I have a friend that uses a flush every oil change.. Once, I read the back of the empty can out of curiousity, and it stated "Not Reccomended for Turbocharged Vehicles." |

Pretty much the only engine cleaner product that the BITOG crowd recommends is Auto-Rx:
http://www.auto-rx.com/ Sounds like "snake-oil", but many, many people over on the BITOG forums have had very good luck with it. Not something I'd use on a well-maintained vehicle, but if you have a sludge-prone engine or purchase a used vehicle with an unknown past it's a good product to use that will safely help to clean up the internals. |

I believe that all oils have a detergent additive to keep the engine clean. However, this is added in amounts that will not impair the load carrying capacity of the oil. If extra detergent is added and the engine run off load for a short time before an oil change, it could assist the cleaning process.
That's my theory. It may or may not be the case. Anyone know? Personally I never use the stuff but have seen some of my engines with internal deposits despite regular oil changes. |

Any old engine is gonna pick up deposits of carbon and other nastiness as they get older, the loose stuff gets picked up by the filter, most of it, however, just stays put and keeps to itself. These engine cleaning additives are no worse than any old snake oil, not entirely necssary, not particularly harmful, and unimpressively helpful. Use them if you wish, but know that they probably aren't gonna do anything but detract from your bank account.
