Default WRX won't start, then will

my wife's '02 WRX 4EAT (unmodded) has done this twice today -

stick key in, turn it, won't start. pull key out, try it again and it starts, but the clock and odometer are reset (but not the radio presets.)

bad ignition switch, alarm control box?

any one have this problem, or any ideas?

thank-you for any help!!!!

Did you check to make sure the terminals are securly connected to the battery. Definately sounds electrical. I had problems with the motor cranking for a few seconds before starting in the past. That all changed when I stuck in the Optima Red Top battery. No hesitation anymore.

i don't think its as simple as that - first time you turn the key, idiot lights on dash but nothing else, no cranking, nothing. pull out key, retry, and it fires right up like nothing's wrong (except clock and odometer are reset.)

does the '02 factory alarm kill the starter?

Bet it's either the battery or the main battery wires. The reset of the clock and radio is proff your voltage is dropping way low, which means the starter is pulling more current than the battery can deliver. Because it works the second time, it's likely a loose connection.

Check surface charge of the battery, check voltage and current going to the starter motor, check all terminals and connections.

factory alarm does disable the starter, there is a little metal panel screwed to the bottom of the steering column under the dash, with two black relays. one is the starter disable relay, the other is the alarm horn relay.

the security system harness plugs in to the radio harness, between the stereo and the vehicle harness. maybe a memory power wire has a poor contact or is broken, triggering the false starter innerupt.
