Impreza GC8 p0037 after running 87 octane for the 1st time.

I was broke as hell the day before yesterday and I needed gas to get to work so I put in 87 octane for the first time ever since I bought it. I've always put in 91. But anyways, I drove to work and I got this CEL. P0037. Could the gas have caused this cel? thanks -Ryan

P0037 Rear oxygen sensor heater circuit malfunction

The oxygen sensor has a little heater on it, basically just a shorted wire, to help get the sensor up to operating temperature and keep it there. I can't think of how running the wrong octane would affect this circuit. But, maybe one of the great minds here will have something else to say. I am guessing, however, that this is unrelated to your gas usage. Time for a new sensor, most likely. When was the last time you changed?
You could clear the code and run the expensive stuff and see if it comes back...

Also my air/fuel ratio gauge is hooked up to my rear o2 sensor and my gauge is reading lean. (And I have my fuel pressure at 45psi at idle. with a wrx fuel pump) so the gauge usually reads optimal at idle and a little rich at WOT(Nitrous equipped RS incase you're wondering.)

But I was thinking the Sensor has taken a dump and thats why my air/fuel gauge is incorrect. I have put in half a tank of 91 octane with some NOS octane booster(Black bottle) since this started. No impovement. I clear the CEL everytime I see it but it only seems to come on if the car is warming up.

P.S. I have no Catillac Converters. (track pipe with o2 sensor ports) but I've had this installed for months now with no problem. (In case you're wondering, it sounds like crap, kinda like a Baja bug!)

Just change the sensor and away you go. That would be the next logical step as it will eliminate another variable in the problem.

OK im just going to call it a CAT from now on.

But anyways, the CEL only comes on when I first start my car, and I clear it and it will only come back if I shut it off, let it cool down, and start it again. My question is, will this code make my car run any different?

If you're piggybacking an AFR gauge off the stock sensor (which it sounds like you are) then if I were you I'd disconnect that first and see if it fixes the problem - BEFORE dropping $$ on a new sensor - especially if you're too broke to buy premium gas

An RS should run fine on 87; why were you putting 91 in it?

I have a 75 shot of nitrous with some fuel risers. Thats why I use 91. And as for the afr gauge, its connected to the pin out on the ecu. The gauge has been installed for over a year so I don't see how it would all of the sudden start messing with the sensor. And as for the "Too Broke" thing, everyone has hard times. I was doing better the next day.
