CEL P0302 after changing timing belt on 98 OBS 2.2L
98 OBS 2.2L no mods, 62k Mi, all normal maintenance done on schedule- here is the problem.
Changed the timing belt (new cam and crank seals), installed new H2O pump, and replaced a couple of drive axles last weekend (the tensioner appeared to be good- slowly compressed the needle, installed a pin and on reinstall pulled the pin and it snapped the belt tight- so I elected to reuse it. Started up and everything seemed good. The car ran nicely for one day- then it threw a P0302 CEL. Pulled the spark plug and it showed signs of old age- so replaced all 4. Light went out on its own without clearing the code. Car ran fine again. Same CEL got thrown yesterday. Pulled the timing cover everythign looks the same as when I did the work. The resistance across the coil pack, and all the fuel injectors are within tollerance per the manual. I've refered to the service manual and have a really stupid question. On the crank shaft sproket there is an arrow, on the crankshaft trigger wheel there is a notch. They are not lined up- are they supposed to be? Additionally- they are in exactly the same position as they were when removed and ultimately reinstalled. Which one is TDC? The arrow or the notch? My gut tells me its the notch- but the arrow is so tempting. And now with the CEL and all I am second guessing everything I've done. Today- with the cams alligned at the notches, and the crankshaft alligned with the notch pointing to the notch on the sensor housing- install the timing cover- install the crankshaft pulley- the notch on the crankshaft pulley is nowhere near the timing marks. Need help! Does this even matter? Nooner

You have to be certain that the timing marks are aligned as per the service manual. The notch on the crank pulley is not indicative of correct timing, it's the marks on the cam and crank sprockets that matter.

So, ignore the tempting arrow on the crank sproket. Got it. At this very moment, all timing marks are aligned, the belt is going the correct direction, the tooth count is correct. I'm buttoning the thing up. Thanks.

Ive done multiple timing belts...I always align it to the marks (only if the car is in time to begin with)..take cover off..turn the engine to TDC...make sure you lines all line up...if they don't bump the cams back till they line up (except on interference engines..don't awnt to bend a valve)...then put the belt on and release tensioner...turn the crank 2 times back to TDC and make sure everything lines back up!...good to go...
