Question Ok, need some basic clarfication

To preface, I know very little about tires and wheels. I have familiarized myself with some of the basics over the many searches I have done thru Nabisco and Tire Rack.

Basically I need some clarification regarding sizes. I know this type of thread has been worn out, but I need a bit more info to continue my searches for the widest, stiffist, and lightest tire/wheel combo. Any suggestions would be great but this is not the focus of the thread.

From what im reading unless im getting tottaly mixed up is that on the WRX sedan you can get up to a 17x8.5 wheel and up to 245 width tire with no rubbing issues and decent room for aftermarket brakes (which I don't plan to do for a long time, if ever). I know the ofset is an issue also and im running stock everything atm and will not alter the fenders or suspension/brakes for this mod.

My question is: If I get a smaller wheel like a 17x7.5/8 and get as wide of a tire as I can (lets say hopefully 245), will the sidewall be less stiff opposed to getting a wider wheel with the same width tire? It seems better to get the larger wheel width to fit the wide tires better so they aren't hanging over the side so much to allow maximum sidewall stiffness? Am I on the right path?

I hope im not confusing everyone with my blabber I trying to get this stuff right.
