Unhappy I was planning on it...

But alas after attending the Divisionals we heald here in Sacramento a couple of months ago... I don't think I'll bother this year... I can't justify spending that amount of time and money to go have a bunch of ITR's spank me around the track... I won't even venture into the IS300 that was there and beat Kevin McDonald (I think that was his name, does pro solo all the time, and placed at nationals last year) anyway beat him both days by around 1/2 a second!!!

Sorry no funding for feeble attempts at glory... Maybe next year...

I'm tempted to go, but I think I, too, will have to say "maybe next year". Regardless of when I go, my car will be nothing more than an also-ran in CSP. (I base that on the fact that Mark Daddio beat me by nearly 1.5sec on a roughly 45sec course in his DSP Neon at our last local non-SCCA auto-x. Since CSP cars are supposed to be faster than DSP cars, I figured that performance didn't bode well for my chances at the national level).

Anyway, I do have a couple things I'd like to do before I get humiliated - you know, just to try to minimize the humiliation. This winter I'll be acquiring 15x8" Volk TE-37s and the new ECSTA V700s to replace my current 15x7" Raceline RL-7s and "old skool" V700s. Those two changes will drop 14+ pounds from each corner, which should make a significant difference in the car's performance. I'd also consider going to higher spring rates with my DMS Golds - perhaps 260f/225r rather than 225f/180r. That's not something I want to do for everyday use, but I think it would give me a bit more uncompromising setup for more serious competitive efforts.

I'm honestly still tempted to go this year, because I think I could surprise a lot of people with how my 3250# 4 door sedan performs in CSP. Maybe I'll convince myself to go, but I doubt it.

I will be there for what probably will be the last race I drive my 98 RS. My RS will be up for sale at Nationals. If someone is interested they can take the car home from Nationals!!

For all you STS types - what's the story on brake pads? I was just reading through the rules online and it mentions x-drilled or slotted rotors are OK, but I didn't see anything about replacement pads.

Also, what do you guys run for wheels and tires? Just regular 16x7" RS wheels? Or do guys run smaller wheels/shorter tires for a gearing advantage?

Last but not least, how strict is the "emissions-legal" thing on the headers? I have the MRT system, which has a cat and will pass CT emissions, but if you wanted to be really anal it's not legal since it only has that one cat rather than the stock two.

Depending on the above stuff, my car would almost certainly be waaaaaay more competitive in STS rather than CSP. Something to think about....

Patrick - For brake pad rules in STS you follow the rules for stock. They basically state that you can use any brake pad compound (pad).

I too was planning on making a showing at the Nationals this year, unfortunatly my schooling will make it impossible this year. Unless someone is willing to let me co-drive their STS car, then I could fly in Fri nite and fly home on Sunday night! And I was shooting for a top 10 in STS! I even had sponsors lined up to help pay my way!

I'll be making my first trip out. Abandoning my normal g-stock ride ('99 2.5RS) to join the Subies in STS. Will be running Sean Ross' '99 2.5RS (silver) and will be rooming with Steve Wynne.

We have a little flyer up on web site we're using to promote the event...

Wink selling RS

My plan is not to jump brands, but to get in a current body style car.

I am not positive which class I will end up in, but we will see.

See everyone at Nationals.

I'll be there running SM. Lots of testing between now and then. The car did well at the Houston Divisional, still not nearly fast enough though. Look forward to seeing everyone out there. I am driving out on Sunday.

Hey Gary or anyone else that can answer this question from Jeff Vogel out of the NE Oklahoma Region SCCA.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Pat,

Jeff Vogel here, and I need some subaru advice. For some stupid reason I sent
in my nationals entry form so now I have to buy some real tires. I've been
running all year on discontinued BFG R1's from Tirerack. I want to get some
Hoosier A3S02 225/50X16's but I'm worried about the tires fitting on the rear
of the car. Hoosier 225's are a bit wider than BFG or Kumho. So my questions
are:

Do you know if anyone has run these tires on a WRX and if so was there a
fitment problem?

If they do rub a bit, does anyone offer a 1/4" wheel spacer to fit the Sube?

Sorry to bother you with this but I'd hate to spend $ 680.00 on tires only to
find out two of them won't fit. Any advice you could offer would be
appreciated.

Regards,

Jeff
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As far as I know, they should work. What do you guys think.

Jeff could make an appointment with Ron Vermulm of R&S Racing and test fit the Hoosier at the Nationals Warm-up event. Gary Sheenan uses them but I do not know what other things, if any, were done to mount 225/50R16's. Some are using Kuhmos and if they don't rub in the rear then the Hoosiers should at worst case rub lightly in the rear. Chris F. how are the Kuhmos in the rear?

The Kumho's have no rubbing problem in the rear of a WRX. They have about 1cm clearence to both the strut and the fender. The question is how much bigger the Hoosiers are? I am going to run 225/17 Hoosiers for nationals, but have not mounted them yet. They look to be about 1.5cm wider than the 225/17 Kumho. If the same holds true for the 16" I think it would be tight but they should fit. On a side note, I think the Kumho's are getting to be in short supply. A freind of mine who is going to Nationals told me yesterday that Tire Rack is down to something like 12 sets of 225/16 V700's. I don't know about the availability on the Hoosiers, but I suspect the closer we get to Nationals the mopre accute the supply problem will be. Good Luck.

A gentleman in Bremerton had Hoosiers on his red WRX. seemed to fit fine, no spacers.

The gentleman from Montana was, unknowingly, running on 16x7 wheels, so we've proved the tires will fit the wheel wells.

I have 225/50-16 K-tires on mine and have NO issues atall, except they may not last to Nationals

If the Hoosiers ARE wider than the Kumhos, then I pity the fool... I mean the poor tire-buster who has to squeeze them onto a 6.5 in rim. Especially in the field with 1200 desparate autoXers breathing down his neck.
Why Subaru cheated us on rim width is a mystery to me...

Ron and Sonya verMulm, the "R & S" of R&S RacingI understand, are just competing this year, not single-handedly saving the entire Hoosier-using community as in past years. This is hearsay, so check with them, they'll be happy to sell you the tires at least. And they DO deserve your business.

George Perinis and I will be there. We have 225/50 16" Hoosiers on the stock 6.5" rim....and it fits! No rubbing at all. The tire guys have to really man-handle those sidewalls down onto the rim. Hell, everbody was ducking when they were "airing" up the tires!

Man, this is going to be a good showing for the Subarus at the Nationals. On the Street Touring mailing list. There is talk about getting together on Tuesday evening and goto Sonic or find a place with go carts or go cruising.
It would be great for way to have a mini meet during the Nationals.
