Question seat belt tensioner stuck

It seems that the rear selt belt tensioner on the passenger side of my RS has gotten all messed up; I blame the last person who sat back there. From what I can tell the seat belt got pulled all the way out (so it goes into "lock" mode) and then while it was getting fed back in the belt itself got folded up. So even though only about 2/3 of the belt has been spooled back up there's no room for any more on the tensioner. And since it is in "lock" mode you can't pull the belt out to unsnarl it.

I took the tensioner out but didn't see anything that looked like it would undo the "lock" mode. Am I going to have to take this thing apart to fix this? If so, does anyone know how and what I should do?

Thanks for any help....

if you are VERY patient you can usually work it back and forth a little at a time and it will S L O W L Y come out... my last car had something similar happen, a couple pennies fell in as it was retracting and the seatbelt worked funny, my friend worked them out this way.

I'm sure I could take it in under warranty. However, I kinda would like to learn how to fix it myself. I mean, does the highly trained mechanic at my local Subaru dealership just work it back and forth very slowly? Or is there some other way to deal with this? Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Yeah, Brucelee's right. A dealership will not hesitate to order another seat belt for you. It's a good way to cover their ass, since a failed seatbelt could result in a rather large lawsuit for them or SOA.
