Default Thinking 'Bout Putting A Scanner in the Car

I was considering putting a bearcat bct-7 mobile scanner in my car. I've got a 12 year old radar detector and thought about getting a new one, but don't want to spend (nor have) $300 for the passport 8500. Anyways, I thought about the scanner route, not from the standpoint that it would be better than a detector, but may be interesting to listen to conversation, including weather reports (i'm a weather geek too) on my road trips to maine. The bearcat also has a warning light or something indicating police activity, which would be a cheaper alternative, although not as good as a radar detector. The only problem I think I may have is where to put it. I have a wrx and there isn't much room, certainly no DIN slots or anything. Anybody have any suggestions as to whether a mobile scanner is a good/bad idea and where I may be able to install? Thanks.

Talking Definitely!

Mount one of the through the root antennas in the center of the roof to give you that WRC look. Seriously, though, if the scanner is small enough you can install it vertically in the armrest. I had my K40 scanner mounted there for a while before it was stolen. Bastards.

If it won't fit in the armrest, screw the mount onto the glove compartment door.

Fear the Trunkmonkey. There is no cone.

I just happen to have this exact scanner installed

I mounted it on the passenger side of the center hump, so the buttons/knobs are just under the center console plastic. Used a hot glue gun to mount the bracket, sliced the sound isolation and the carpet very cleanly to run the bracket through. I tapped the cig lighter for power, and the antenna wire runs under the pass seat, under the rear seat and up the back post. The actual antenna I ran along the back window at the top, tucked into the overhead. Totally invisible, and still perfect reception.

As far as the bear tracker feature, it is based on the squelch setting. To use that function in town, you have to have the squelch turned down so low that you constantly hear static, so I don't use it in town at all. On the open highway, though, it is invaluable. It picks up the signal from police's mobil extender, which is installed in all cop cars to extend the range of their system. So if the copshop transmits to any car, the mobil extenders on all cars are activated, and you get a beep beep. Range is about three miles, based on squelch setting.

One bad thing, though, is the damn thing gives five LOUD beeps everytime it turns on, so you won't want to leave it on all the time, as these beeps get very annoying.

If your willing to spend more for a better scanner. Radio Shack has the model 2067 scanner which is DIN sized and will fit in the dash.

I got mine on eBay for less than uniden was selling refurbished units for. Brand new unopened in box. I asked no questions.

Wouldn't now be a great time for me to have a digital camera?

It is right next to the center hump on the passenger side in the front. The front passenger could rest his lower calf on it. It is mounted face up w/the speaker firing into the carpet (you can still turn it up too loud anyway). The buttons and dials on the face of it sit just below the plastic of the center console.

Is that good enough?

I was going to buy a scanner and discovered that it is a misdemeanor in New York for use in a car . Apparently some guys robbed a store and used the scanners for a get away. Of course I think this is a stupid law because someone could use it at home (which is still legal) and use a cell phone to tell the bad guys. I think they are illegal in some other states as well. Sure would like one though….

Hmmm... I didn't know they were illegal anywhere.

They do come in handy for those times when, um, you *accidentaly* slip away, then hear your name on the scanner. Time to lay low.
