Default WRX at WRoad America

Gary Sheehan Motorsports this past weekend eaced his 02 WRX preprared for road racing battle. I am not sure what the sactioning body was but alot of the racers were from the west coast including alot of scca crossovers. The class he raced in was perpared street cars with minimal engine mods, cept for inatke and exhaust. Chassis mods are fairly open and it looks like they used dot shaved racing rubber. Firstly the Scoobie garnered alot of attention form the other competitors, form a curious to maybe a little scared point of view. The car looks awsome lowered with big from air dam and splitter and some big rims with a bunch of cambered dialed in. The competitive cars he raced against were other BMW 325is's. In the race 1st lap he led (Gary';s 1st time at RA) and when I lefty he was in second place.

Congrads and thanks to Gary, Joel and the rest of his crew. They showed the Scooby world proud. Unfortunatley not many other midwest ppl were there It would have been great to get some support. Good luck and if they are at a track near you check em out.

Default Go Gary.

Thanks for the info. I have checked the NASA/USTCC and other motorsport sites for results of this event, but so far cannot find any. Has anyone else seen any? Was anyone else at the event? I'm anxious to see how he finished.

Since I had to leave early I am also anxiuos to see the results. As I was driving out thier was another Bimmer starting to snif at his heels. It sure was cool to see and hear that car on the track.

Is thier a web site for nasa or ustcc?

According to www.ustcc.com Gary finished 2nd, behind a 328i. Very impressive. He's doing well in the points race too.

Default What a great performance!

Thanks for the results link. Wow, he really is doing well, even with very little development time, a big weight (ballast) penalty and few motor mods, (nearly stock). I noticed that his fast lap was within a half second or so of the winner's....pretty impressive stuff. His qualifying times werent great though....I wonder if he had problems setting up the car for that track.

Great job, Gary. How about a run-down on this event from from the driver himself?

West Coasters: We'll have to all go out and show our support when he runs at Willow and Laguna Seca this Fall.

The WRX was having serious misfire problems. Not until Sunday did the team find the problem... a BOV that wasn't quite sealing. Of course, I'll let Gary fill in the details.

For their thrash and almost half way disassembling a new engine to fix the problem, I'm happy to award the Sheehan Motorsports team the Road America "Hard Work" award for their efforts.

Being at the track for the first time it took a few laps to learn when to turn. I even saw maps of the track inside a few of the race cars He was also getting some push on the faster corners such as the daunting "kink". He/we installed a much deeper air dam and splitter to help his high speed steering.

hey Joel or Gary, did it help?

I expect Gary and Joel should be back sometime tomorrow or Thursday... then it'll take a day to recover from the drive!!!

We were lazy and had our car (the Spec Miata next door to the Subie) shipped there and back and we flew.

Don't want to spoil (no pun intended) his story, but yes the work you guys did on the splitter at the last minute before the race had an effect on handling.

Hey!!! I may only be 5'4", but you don't have to bag on me.....

My wife Revkah had a good race in Group 1, but of course couldn't touch the BMW or Subie. She took on some cars our own size (RX7s and GTIs).

My race in the 2nd group was a blast. I qualified on the pole, and the eventual winner of the Spec Miata class and I swapped places about 10-12 times during the course of the race. Thinking I was driving an AWD car, I made a banzai pass into T5, blew the exit and went dirt surfing 4 wheels off. I did my best, but the winner was able to pull out a 3 second lead by the checkered.

Maybe I was really born to be a rally driver?

Hey everyone,

Joel and I are busy drinking beers at 4am in...where are we? Oh yeah, Wendover, Utah, about a mile away from the Bonneville Salt Flats. We drove over 900 miles today. Tomorrow morning we're going to hang out with Richard Holdener (last years USTCC champion) for about an hour to see how his 1.6L land speed record is going.

When we finally return I'll post a full report on our crazy week. It was the worst and nearly best of times. Joel wants me to write more, but he's had way too much to drink. More to come soon...
