Default Wheel area noises?

I just bought my car and it only has 18k miles on it. I got it from an older lady so she was probably pretty gentle on it. The biggest problem I have with the car is some noises coming from the front wheels. When I take a hard right corner at certain speeds the left front wheel makes a metallic grinding noise. It only makes this noise when cornering hard. Also when just going straight the front wheels sometimes make a high pitch metallic whining noise. They make this noise when not on the brakes, but sometimes when I first hit the brakes they making the same whining noise. I have some ideas to what the problem could be but would like to hear your thoughts. Thanks

You might have different noises going on. Check your brakes for the braking noise, and the front left drive axle for the noise while turning.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

My '98 makes the whining/screaching noise with the brakes off. So far I have had the front axle repacked and seals replaced and I have had the rear brakes torn apart looking for it. I have come to the conclusion that it is coming from out of round rear drums, because it the sound is not constant and is rotational like it only does it on one place on the drum especially when my brakes are hot.

I think the drum is heating up and expanding and the shoes are touching in a couple of places. When I had the brakes apart, you could see two places where they were touching but I had thought that maybe it was just out of adjustment. I readjusted them (use your parking brake a LOT to keep your rear brakes adjusted) and it still makes the noise.

Looks like I'll have to either replace the rear drums or have them turned.
