Default which turbo kit to buy?

i almost decided to scrap my GC8, but then i came to my senses. to get a wrx would be cool, but to turbo charge MY99 would kick a hella lot more ass. there seems to be a handful of bolt on turbo kits out there but i want to know which ones you guys are using. which has been the most reliable? which was the most complete kit? which kit is the best value? also which ones are the worst in the same regards?

thanks for the info, i intend to order a turbo kit within the upcoming weeks.

Before you get with do a search, let me say it nicely - do a search on turbo and kit.

What you will find is that there are no "kits" currently shipping. There are a number of vendors who offer them, but noone you could call in 2 weeks and say "hey, ship me a kit!"

Kits and rumors of kits:

JCSports - search on THAT, and check them out in the vendor forum. If you STILL deal with them after that, well, you were warned.
ASR - kinda the same deal as above, just not nearly as many people as PO'ed
ludespeed - they say they are taking orders now. Not sure what that means.
Vishnu performance - On the way, not yet here, you can expect that if it comes from shiv its gonna include a TECII.
Redline Performance in Arizona - Some guys on the board got theirs installed there, and they say to call them whenever this question comes up, however, not sure that there is a "kit"
carmodifications.com - the Nam in Minnam. Offers a twin turbo kit that somebody was supposed to be the first install for early htis summer - no word on whether this actually exists.
The other half of Minnam - a new name, forget what it is, there are those who say you can still get what was the old Minnam kit from them, but I don't recall seeing anyone post who actually got one.
imprezars.com - Larry Ganz - the king of customer service in this business. He sells an N1 turbo kit he says is sourced from the same suppliers that JCSports uses. If these are the same suppliers that JCSports always blamed for screwing things up, maybe that's not so great. Perhaps it is just rebranded JCS stuff, like some of the other things on Larry's site. Who knows. Still, I would not hesitate to do business with Larry again.
UPRD - said they were looking to do a kit.
HKS - another rumor of a kit again.

Who will install one for you?

iSR
Cobb Tuning
Rallispec
B-Spec

All of those will install a turbo on your car if you take it to them and drop it off. B-Spec posted that they would work with you and do up a custom kit based on your needs that someone else, even yourself, could install.

Prices for these guys range from about $2800-$9000.

Thumbs up Ludespeed

I just got my kit installed. Ludespeed Stage II with upgraded intercooler. Tom was great to work with, and is doing his best to sort out the problems he had with the initial allotment. He was awesome to work with, and helped me with any and all problems I had (only a few.)

I'd recommend Ludespeed's kit.

The other half of Minnam is now called Technikmotowerks. They can still put together the "Minnam" stage [whatever] kit you want. You can reach them at their web site:

You could always build your own kit. The only real challenge is getting up and downpipes made. Everything else is pretty much universal.

The Arizona company is Forced Air Technologies. They have a kit. Check the links for the URL for their web site. I have their kit on my 99' RS. It's very well made, & I've had zero problems. They have experience with other Subie's, including Legacy's and SVX's.

I absolutely positvely agree 100 percent. A few minor quirks with the larger intercooler rubbing the firewall and such, but easily fixed. My friend waited two months from the time he ordered it, but when it arrived, it arrived 100 percent complete with a kick-ass instruction booklet. Tom has also been overly helpful with any questions that arose.

One word of advice though, unless you are truely 100 percent confident that the installer is more then capable of installing AND tuning it correctly(such as RalliSpec), do it yourself. After having a bit of bad luck with the installer and having to take the kit out and back in and back out and back in, I am confident we could have done just as good of a job in my friend's garage with basic tools(they did a great job on the guages though ).

I too have the Forced Air Tech kit. Had one on my SVX, then pulled it and had one installed on the RS. Great quality work, craftmanship and communication.

AaronB has one from them too.
