Post Rule #1: Do Not Set Your House On Fire!!!

<FONT face="Comic Sans MS">So yeah, I come home tonight (I work second shift, so we're talking midnight here East Coast time) and I recognize an certain odor shall we say as I pull around my favorite bend in my street. I am greeted with a bright orange glow IN THE VICINITY OF MY HOUSE!!!!!!!!! So, I drive a WEE bit faster than usual to find said glow is coming from across the street. Apparently, during the DRYEST 3 or 4 weeks I've seen in a long time my neighbors think it would be a neat idea to try a little permitless, illegal burning behind the house. Great idea, eh? Well, it gets better. Said illegal burn got out of control (ie: flames OVER their garage). The wife is outside hosing down the garage which is in imminent danger of combusting due to the EXTREME heat (you can feel it from the road, forget 30 feet away where the flames actually are). Casual conversation ensues to where she says the fire department hasn't been called?!?!?!! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!?!?! So, we call the fire department. Not wanting to get busted for illegal burning, they go inside, shut off all the lights, and pretend like nothing's going on. Great idea, no really... they aren't going to figure out that a bunch of building materials in a neat pile in towering flames wasn't started by anything but natural causes... riiiiiiight. So, we call the neighbor, and tell her to get the two kids (oh yeah, they have 2 kids, 5 and 3 I believe) out of the house and NOW!! So she takes off in the car with the kids as the police show up and hubby stays behind. Fun night! The paint on the house and garage started to blacken as the fire department showed up (takes awhile, it's all volunteer... small NH towns you understand ). Well, 2 cruisers, 2 or 3 of the volunteer's cars, 4 fire trucks (3 pumpers I believe) all show up before the thing is done and over with. Now, I'm not the most worldly person out there, but why do you start an open burn in the middle of the night??? At any rate, a couple of pics as things were being put out (couldn't get closer- they didn't even want me utside... but hell, you're in my driveway so...). In the top pic, the rightmost blur (bad pic, I know) is a lick of flame. Mind you, I'm about 50+ feet away, so you get an idea of the height of the flames). Second pic is of the rescue truck sitting in my driveway and the flames dying as they put it out...

Not meaning to out-do you north but on tues I saw a van catch fire. No biggy so far but while the fire dept was en-route the genius decided to run back into his van to pull out some belongings ( read groceries) while flames were blowing out the back. Lucky for him the van waited to blow up ( YES BLOW-UP!!) until he got back to the gas station parking! But wait it gets better ( for me anyway ) I was 14.50 into 15 dollars worth of gas and they turned the pump's off and I paid .50 for about 10 gallon's of gas High prices my arse

And also, if you're gonna be doing any illegal burning outdoors, I'd say the best time to do that would be at night, when the flames will point you out best.

My step-second cousin(???) was playing with fire behind his mom's garage... decided to put it out with dried hay, then covered it over with snow and left. Well the snow acted like an oven for the dry fuel and it ended up burning down the garage with the car in it. Total loss.

Half the people in the world have below average intelligence.

A great fact of life.

EDIT: Just wanted to say that I am glad everyone was all right, especially the children.

Not to diminish the story or anything, but technically, I think rule #1 is don't set yourself on fire. Rule #2, don't set your house on fire, would be next.

I like to eat ants.

Actually I think setting yourself on fire has more to do with your religious beliefs.

Setting your house on fire is just plain dumb.

So, you could like sit on your porch and roast marshmellows?

This is the 2nd time I read about somebody doing this.. The other person did about the same thing but decided to call the fire department when the shed caught on fire. I believe that one went to 3 alarms.

Oh the gene pool!

I was a volunteer firefighter...I've seen some stupidity

'But what do you mean Mr. Firefighter, Sir? I can't have my SUV on 4WD mode for 6 straight hours of 80 mph+ driving? I should have kept it in 2WD, eh? So that's why my engine caught fire I didn't know that my SUV wasn't designed to be switched into 4WD on the highway...'

Actually it has nothing to do with intelligence. Some of the smartest people in the world have absolutely no common sense. I see it all the time and it purely amazes me!
