Default First oil change?

Got a quick question, when am I due for my first oil change on my '05 2.5 RS Sport? I haven't gotten anything that would let me know so I checked my owners manual and all it talked about was 3.0L Subarus and said to refer to the warranty and maintance booklet for others, well that was no help at all either. Right now the car has 3500 miles and I'm afraid it I wait to long and something happens it will affect my warranty.

I changed mine at 1000, then against 3k. Both times all sorts of assembly grease/prep comes out in the oil. Change it asap!

yes, do it yourself or pay someone, but either way change it.

I was running full synthetic on my RS with 58k miles on it right now and I waited 4k miles to change the oil and when I bought the car I checked the oil and it was BLACK!

Anyways, my baby has a 'high performance' oil filter in her as well as mobil 1 15k mile 'special' synthetic, so needless to say, she purrrrrs like a kitten now.

ahhh... oil change feel goood...

its a brand new engine...during break in you are supposed to change the oil at 1000 miles. there are lots of metallic particles that come off of parts and end up in the oil. its definatly not good....and yes im special

I'm with Hayes.. I called the dealer when mine was new and they said 3000 miles.

You dont have much to worry about..

5-30 Mobile One ever since and it comes out looking like it did when i went in. I do mine every 5000.

The oils now compared to 10 years ago are far better and will last longer "under normal driving" (whatever that is)..

Ummm, doesnt all oil turn black after a couple passes through the engine? Im pretty sure as oil heats up and breaks down it just turns black. But Im not car expert or chemist.

Don't worry, your engine will be fine that's why you have an oil filter, it keeps those particles out of your engine. I never take my Suby anywhere to change the oil except my own driveway or a friends. Too many horror stories and bad personal experiences with shops that forget to put the drain plug back on tight or overfill with oil.

Also, don't worry about these BS " high performance" filters. They are a waste of money. Just buy an OEM Subaru for like $6-7 (they have check valves to keep oil flowing one direction) and then buy a decent oil, if you are uncertain about the oil check one of the oil stickies on this site.

I would recommend changing it soon, though. Just my .02.

oil doesn't automatically turn black after a few passes. It turns black because of friction which lowers the viscosity and also repeated exposure to high heat. I'm also (taking a guess on this one) assuming that the deposits in your engine contribute to the "blackness" of your oil. If you check your oil and it is black, it is a good indication that it's time for a change.

wow lots of misinformation in this thread. some of the more recent people need to try searching (this topic has been covered ad nauseam). I am a chemical engineer - oil color has nothing to do with the condition (well it could or it couldnt, no way to tell). Oil color is more related to the carbon deposits that get dumped in it, the only way to tell the condition of an oil is to do the oil analysis (lots of commercial companies will do this for really reasonable prices if you want). Any of the analysis I have done has shown that you dont need to worry about the condition of the oil (well, in my personal case under 6k miles on a synthetic), but rather the additive package, and the possiblity of any extraneous materials making it past the filter (copper, iron, antifreeze etc!). so anyways, change the oil as much as you want, but subaru says every 3.5 miles or 7k miles i believe (except for the first oil change which might be 3k (check your manual!))

and save your money, just use regular subaru or purolator (oem manufacturer) oil filters.

Now when you try to sell your car, someone will dig this post up and demand a discounted price since the engine could have damage. Rock on!

if the car has never had full synthetic oil in it before, with 58k miles on the car all the blackness was caused by all the sludge the synthetic scraped off the insides.

On my first attempt with synthetic oil I umm learned the hardway about switching to synthetic with the ultra low 83k mileage on the car. Yes folks you can change every oil seal in about 14 hours inbetween work and your wife talking so sweetly to you about using her car for work.

So just remember, high mileage oil leak prevention is because of the accumulated sludge by the seals where oil flow is none too fast.
