Question Jumping tachometer.

Ok...this isn't on my RS, but it occuring on my other Subaru, my wonderful--1986 Brat.

Here's a little background and I'll try to keep it short:

I drove from my house to Tampa this weekend. That's about 270 miles from Miami. I took the Brat since I had some very good crazy friends that wanted to help replace the CV joints. I drove fairly quickly--sustained 75mph for a 73hp motor, and didn't have a single problem. It ran great.

However, when I went out to start it Saturday morning, the tachometer began to jump wildly whether the car was at idle or moving. Experience tells me that its the distributor. Off to a local junkyard to fetch another and guess what? The tachometer still jumps, but only above 3000rpm. I also replaced the ignition coil as well. I don't feel a loss in power and I tested the alternator by turning on everything at full tilt. No dimming lights or anything that would indicate a problematic alternator.

Anyone have any ideas?

My friend that has a 92 Ford Tempo has the same problem. And same conditions, only when he runs the car hard. . . he had two things done in his car, changed his transmission mounts and had the block heater replaced recently(it was rotting), and so far, he hasn't had the problem come up again.

Thumbs up

I was just reading the Chilton's manual again. I think the angle of the distributor may just be a little off. Thanks for the reply.

Anyone else have any ideas?
